The White House on Tuesday began offering buyouts worth seven months of salary to all federal employees who opt to leave their jobs by Feb. 6 part of President Donald Trumps unprecedented overhaul of the U.S. government. A memo from the Office of Personnel Management, the governments human resources agency, lists four directives that it says Trump is mandating for the federal workforce, including that most workers return to their offices full-time.

It includes a deferred resignation letter for federal employees wishing to participate. If you choose not to continue in your current role in the federal workforce, we thank you for your service to your country and you will be provided with a dignified, fair departure from the federal government utilizing a deferred resignation program, the email reads. This program begins effective January 28 and is available to all federal employees until February 6. It adds, If you resign under this program, you will retain all pay and benefits regardless of your daily workload and will be exempted from all applicable in-person work requirements until September 30.

Yeah, it's a delayed resignation at best. You still would have to work til 9/30/25. Pretty sure there are additional clauses that would instantly terminate you as well.

Something to note here is that Donald Trump, notorious for not paying employees what he owes them, does not have the authority to dole out this sort of cash.

OPM is compromised. Our whole government is compromised.

If returning to the office was a deal breaker, this gives you 8 months to find a new job while still letting you work from home.

Very few imo are going to take that offer. Not many employers offer pensions anymore but the government is one of them ( for now). Too many 20+ year careers to give that up. No to mention the other benefits ( healthcare).

Most Federal positions do NOT have pensions.

There's no buyout or seven months of pay. It's just us continuing to get paid for working. We still have to work, just not in the office. We get nothing after we stop working. We're still subject to any BS they institute between now and the resignation date. We could still be fired, this isn't any type of job guarantee. This is purely to create a fear based decision.

As mentioned in the other topic, hr@opm is a rogue OPM effort, collecting PII without a PIA, ATO, etc., and the message body is verbatim Musk.

Yeah, he's trying to get around laws that don't allow the president to fire most federal employees without cause. But the reason those laws exist is because it would be a lot harder to hire people for these positions if they knew they could just be fired for political reasons when a new administration rolls in and it would be extremely disruptive to the functioning of the federal government to have new presidents gutting entire government agencies every four to eight years.

I won't be taking this offer. Haven't gotten the email yet, and even if I did it's not worth it.

Only 7 months? Also what guarantee I have this money won't forever be in the mail? Trump isn't exactly reliable on paying people.

I'd advise my fellow federal workers to decline this offer.

It's a carrot and stick offer, basically take 7 months pay and leave(carrot), or we are going to make your life hell through RTO, relocation, and budget cuts (stick). It's so insultingly low because the threat on the other side if you don't is so big.

In theory there would be no shutdown if it was privatized.

Since it would essentially be a company wealthy owned entity. This is what the Heritage Foundation and Musk wants. Not specifically the elimination of shutdowns, but the ability to have complete control of the government through a plutocracy.

No, this is the plan. Gut government to a point of not functioning, point out how ineffective the government is, say that privatization would fix it, profit. This has been the Republican way for 40 years as they hamstring the public sector and horde wealth and power into the private.

Anyone who falls for this deserves to not be paid when he never actually pays up.

I just saw that Sen. Tim Kaine is warning people not to take it, saying that there is no budget line to pay that money and people will most likely end up getting shafted

It's also a great way to know which employees to fire first, before the deadline.
