In theory, she could be considered one of the "good billionaires" in the sense that she really did nothing to build her wealth other than exist. Her father bought the Chicago Bears back in 1920 for $100, and she inherited the team when he died in 1983.

we have had a lot of what would be branded as DEI hires with her as owner. Their current GM and President are African American. Lovie Smith was probably their most successful coach of the last 30 years

10 million, honestly. Assuming you live 100 years, that's 100k a year. If you're 30 when you acquire that much, and live to 100, it's 142k a year.

No one should have more money than that while a third of the nation is barely surviving.

The Bears have been pretty mediocre or bad for most of the time since the 90s (that was when almost all the people hired by George Halas were finally gone). Saying the Bears have suffered under the McCaskeys isn't really an exaggeration. The only good long term streak they have had since the 80s was about a 5 year run during Lovie Smith's tenure.

Miss me with the comparison to the Giants. They have FOUR fucking Super Bowls. Bears ownership is a different level of incompetent. If this leads to them selling the team, I wouldn't be surprised if they immediately get better, like what happened to Washington this year

She was as old as my grandma. Somehow I don't think she had the same type of experiences during the Great Depression like my grandma unless her dad got rich later in life.

The real tragedy here is that her fortune will pass to the next generation almost completely intact instead of being properly taxed.

The NFL wasn't really rich in the 30s (teams were still folding back then), but I'm sure someone who's dad was able to own a sports team had a better life in the 30s than most.

Right. So in this case, being the daughter of a guy that bought a football team nearly 100 years ago before anyone knew the NFL would turn into a multi-billion dollar league somehow makes her an evil person?

Not necessarily evil, sure.

But undeserving? Yes, definitely. Nobody should have that kind of wealth, no matter how it is obtained, and inheritance is one of the most obviously undeserving ways to be filthy rich.

So we just disregard the millions and millions of dollars NFL teams and players spend in charitable endeavors to pull up people that wouldn't have had those opportunities otherwise becasue their wealth has gotten to some arbitrary number you have in your head that you consider "too much"?

Again, not to shill for millionaires and billionaires, but I always find this conversation funny, because the number that's considered "too much" changes from person to person.

The first three, sure. When you make sweeping generalizations about race religion or sex, you are talking about millions or billions of different people at once, so the assertion probably won't hold

And it's not like the argument is that all these billionaires are evil (although many are, very visibly these days).

The argument is that nobody should have that kind of wealth.

Most NFL players' charities are vehicles for their friends and families to squeeze out overhead while you get a sizable tax write-off. Some of them simply just send the remaining money along to a real charity, so all they are doing is acting as a middle man who gets e.g. 40% of your donation.

If they had a larger tax burden instead, that money would go much further toward helping people.
