which would you be?

This is a question brought up by a snowbunny. She was curious to which animal/lifeform has the most enjoyable life.

That's probably because there's a significant chance that there is no extraterrestrial life. And even if there is, we have no idea what it is, how to describe it, or what to call it.

There is almost certainly extraterrestrial life even in our solar system, just nothing above the most simple forms of unicellular life because none of them have access to the higher energy metabolisms that photosynthesis allow.

I would be an indoor/outdoor house cat. I can just go out and shag other cats and then come in to the house when it gets too cold or I am unsuccessful in my hunt.

Probably because they actually read the topic title.

It's not about us exploring the universe, it's about the universe exploring us. We're within ~100 years of having the capability to launch a galaxy-spanning, self-sustaining automated galactic survey, and while such a survey would take tens if not hundreds of thousands of years to complete, it would require no additional oversight from us once up and running. That we have not seen evidence of any similar efforts from extraterrestrial life does lend credence to the idea that we are very likely alone in the universe, at least in terms of intelligent life.

It is very possible that intelligence is an evolutionarily disadvantageous trait in the long term, something we're doing our damndest to prove as a species as we speak. The dinosaurs lasted hundreds of millions of years; we're about 100,000 years into our tenure as a species and maybe 10,000 as a societal species and we've already cooked up several ways that we can render ourselves extinct in short order.

One could also interpret "life form" as a form of anything, living or not, simply in the shape of something alive.
