Depends on geography. Where I live in the Midwest you would live extremely comfortable on that salary. Sure its not what it was in the 90s but its still damn good money where I live and you would want for nothing on that and could easily raise a family. I see people do it on less than that and live very well.

Whatever you make feels normal so barely anyone feels rich. People in general have a better sense of what they cant have because they dont have enough money compared to what theyd lose if their salary dropped.

Most people suck at managing finances, so no matter how much/little they make, they're going to struggle. We really need to make education like this mandatory in schools.

If I made even half of that, I could easily afford to rent a good place by myself. With that I could do so while saving up to buy a house in just a few years. As it currently stands I'm having to move back into my parents' place next week, at the age of 38, as my landlords are no longer able to rent out their basement, and I can't afford any other places currently for rent, even with a roommate.

Yeah I was thinking in context of the United States but absolutely gets multiplied when you start taking other countries into consideration. I know people in the Philippines and where they live this would make you unbelievably rich.

Im really good friends with a girl who left there to go work in Dubai and Abu Dhabi because she was making like $100 a month in the Philippines in her area. I feel terrible for her because she works incredibly exploitive housekeeping jobs where she works 7 days a week like 14 hours a day but shes happy because she makes like $350 a month and can support her family back home.

This doesnt surprise me at all. Its all too common.

I have friends back in the UK who make similar amounts to me, and few who make significantly more, but I have a much better amount of disposable income than any of them.

If you're single, you can live with $100k and save money in the most expensive cities in the states. Which could mean a one-bedroom apartment or even a studio. You'll just have to live below your means and budget. I do think the 33% of your gross salary towards your rent/mortgage is a good idea. Sometimes its good to pay extra for safety though.

$100k in the 80s was a lot. It's like $250k now.

100k is a lot of money. Barring the circumstances of living in California or something 100k is enough to live more than comfortably with no problems as long as you don't spend your money like you're making 100k. Most people who make 100k spend their money like they make 100k.

Part of making more money is incremental expenses keep piling. And I don't mean lifestyle creep in the sense of keeping up with the Joneses and getting new cars and going on expensive vacations.
I mean that you can afford to fix that weird noise your car keeps making and bam, now you're out a couple grand. You choose to live 10 minutes from work instead of an hour and now you're out an extra $400 a month. You want to start saving for retirement since your company has a 5% match so you at least put that in since it's free money. Your dress code is professional now and/or your job doesn't give you a uniform, so you have to budget for work clothes.

Soon enough you're ending up where you were at before you made six figures with not much to show for it so it just feels like the raise disappeared.

$100,000
Pay probably around $20,000 give or take where you live
Average rent in the US is ~$2,000 per Zillow = $12,000 for the year
Average car payment is $500 to $700 = $6,000 to $8,400 per year
Proper insurance coverage is probably $200 a month = $2400 for the year
Assume maybe $400 a month on utilities? ($4800 per year)

Average American drives about 13,000 miles.
Average gas mileage in the US is ~25mpg
Average gas is ~$3.15/gallon
= $1,638

$59,162

If you wised up to contribute to your 401k, now you're at $35,662

Call groceries $300 a month = $3600 a year
at $32,662

This is assuming you really are running relatively life and looking out for yourself.

Support someone? that probably eats half that; have a life? to each to their own. Major city in California, or New York, tragic.

Relatively speaking, you're doing a lot better than a lot of people, but without a rather cost-conscious mentality, you may be only coming out ahead for the year by less than $20,000.

In maybe 3-5 years you may be good for a house in less expensive states (for like a $400k house?). All power to you if you're really going to go that way.

But consider:
When you buy a car, the potential down payment
You want to take a trip, realistically it can be a couple grand
Medical insurance and episodes
Potential car accident or flats
You do need to buy clothes
Pet costs.

I mean still, you're fine if you're not going hard on everything at the same time. You're in control of choices a lot of people can't make, but the point to make is you're exactly holding power. You're doing enough to obtain proper growth. You're not rich until you amass the savings.
