I heard her talking about Trump talking points on the phone with a relative. She was talking about saving from government waste and men playing women's sports. She was talking about her vote being a private thing. And when I brought this up, I also said "You told me you voted for Harris. Is that true?" And she said, "Actually, I voted for Trump."

I asked why she lied to me. She had said she voted for Harris when she went to do it. I asked her why she lied and she said she didn't want to upset me. I told her I was disappointed she had lied. She said she wanted a change. I brought up that Trump's tax plans will cost her more, that he's basically a con man, that programs she's going to need like social security and medicaid are under attack and that I think she's going to regret it. Stuff I'd said before I knew she voted for him. But that it won't affect our relationship. I just sort of rubbed my forehead in resignation. I watched the last episode of Last Week Tonight (John Oliver) and she said she thought some of what Trump's doing is bad. I brought up the capitol storming and she just went "yeah..." She had spoken negatively about him before. Of course, it was usually when I was, too.

I had sort of suspected this for a while. She seemed optimistic about him getting elected. When I heard her parroting the talking points it clicked. I feel bad that my mom is one of millions tricked. She asked me not to tell my sister so I guess now I'm keeping that secret from her.

Why not punish her a bit by telling your sister about it? After all, she deserves to know what her mother did.

Mom: Nothing wrong with voting for him!

Also Mom: Please keep it a secret from your sister.

I don't want to hurt her. She can't undo it, anyway. She did ask me "does it really make a difference?" And I told her yes, of course. She said our state is always blue no matter what and I said I wouldn't be so sure.

My sister would probably flip but she also knows and loves my mom so maybe she'd just deal with it in the context I described here.

I hear you. Ive got a few of those in my family.

My brothers and I have been making my dad feel guilty as hell and a huge idiot for voting for that POS this time around. My dad was the type that didnt realize how much his policies hurt our immediate and extended family. I dont believe my dad to be racist, just an idiot who bought in.

Gunna be testing them (parents) with something in a few weeks, because my brothers (sisters in law as well) and I have banded together to never reconnect with idiot extended trumpet relatives again. Its the Christian type veterans that look down on other parts of family because they are cousins and aunts that married partners of different ethnicity.

Well damn, maybe your mom shouldn't have made a decision she's ashamed of that she felt the need to hide from her children.

I know my mom voted for him three times. In 2020 she was repeating "Biden is the true racist" talking points, the type of thing that feels rehearsed.

My mom just retired and is trying to get social security set up. And I am keeping my damned mouth shut.

Considering how much his policies hurt women, I dont understand how any self-respecting woman could vote for him.

It sounds like she wasn't being evil or malicious just due to the fact that she seemed ashamed to vote for Trump, but it really is a "fuck around and find out" situation. Voting for someone else just because you want change is like the worst reason to ever vote for someone. And now someone who could potentially dismantle our democracy is in office because of that desire for change.

Not to hijack, but the brilliance knows no bounds.
I know my parents and grandmother voted for him. I tried to stay quiet but a few nights ago I tried to explain to my dad about what's actually going on because he ONLY uses Fox News. I proceeded to get some of the dumbest counter points...

I explained how there's essentially an administrative coup going on, how they're intentionally destroying things to reboot it as an autocracy like Russia. I get as a response "You gotta remember, this country has been going to hell in a handbasket for 100 years." ... ? Yeah okay, it was so much better back in 1925, the good ole days.

I then further went on about how their being backed by billionaires that want to create an AI god, grind people into bio-fuel, all sorts of other stuff. "But you should see some of the stuff Biden and Obama have done. Spending billions on condoms for gays in Gaza." "That's not true." "It is! I'll sit and talk with you about it rationally, but not if you're going to get upset."

This coming from the guy that would break windows, TV remotes, and default to property damage for talking about something he didn't agree with.

This was after I already said he was a lost cause on here, holy shit I didn't know it was so delusionally bad. To him, grinding people into fuel and saying Hitler only did things in defense is on level with providing condoms in terms of bad.

Exactly.

I would have told her that. But then again I'm super confrontational with people, and willing to cut ties with anyone who voted for the fascist. And I'm also in a position where I can do that safely. Luckily even my estranged father and step-mother and my brother whom I've only spoken to once in three years, didn't vote for Trump.

My parents didn't vote, but they would have voted Trump. I kept it a secret that I voted Harris. They know now that I don't support Trump, but neither know that I voted.

Mom is very vocal about how great she thinks Trump is, and that he's doing so much good for the people. She's convinced that he's going to save the economy and give the working class huge tax breaks. She's been bragging about great him and Musk are doing in funding government waste.

She's admits that she's 100% uninformed on what's actually going, but she's always on Facebook having her opinions fed to her. Then if I disagree or point out something wrong(like Jan 6th) then it's fake news and a Democrat conspiracy. Telling me that I can't believe everything that you hear, while telling me about how great of a father Musk is in the next breath...

I've given up trying to open her eyes.
Dad supports Trump because he likes how hateful he is. He loves to see people upset, cand Trump does that. Also, dad is pretty racist, so of course he supports Trump. He enjoys seeing people upset or suffer because someone has power over them and made it happen. He eats it up.

This. A Republican voter that wants their vote to be kept a secret from friends/family knows that what they are doing is wrong. They just don't want to face any consequences for choosing evil.

I doubt any of them specifically care that much about it, as you imply it is a tiny non-issue that affects almost nobody. It is on the other hand something they can share that is palatable to the masses. You can't just say "I hate trans people!" even on Fox News yet, but you can say "I hate trans people! (in sports)" Then it is suddenly socially acceptable!
