Sure, the USA might be corrupt and capitalistic to a fault. But there were never any doubt that the USA represented the free world when it mattered the most.

Now with the Trump administration siding with Russia and unapologetically kneeling to billionaires, all the WW I and II veterans must be rolling in their graves.

I was wrong. Most Americans either support it or don't care. I'm unsure which is worse.

The entire world saw it coming in 2016, we we're hoping you wouldn't be stupid enough to elect a felon, rapist, child abuser again, more so when it was confirmed he is a criminal, a rapist and a child abuser.

I don't know who TC is, but every time he gets accused of being of the ilk he is criticizing he goes weirdly quiet, which strikes me as confirming behavior.

As an English-Australian that's most assuredly not what I've been taught in history.

The signs America could turn into a fascist imperial power have been there for over a century, always a bad dice-roll or two away. Many people in Middle Eastern and South American nations would have a strong argument that the US has always been one as well. This is simply the first time America has decided to openly turn against its allies (prior to this is simply used its leverage as the bigger player to make its allies acquiesce to its demands rather than threatened to/actually sell them out to rival fascist powers).

History, assuming we don't die in the coming years nor die out to climate change over the next decade and a half, will point to Russia's invasion of Ukraine as the start of World War III.

We've been in the opening acts of it for three years. We just didn't know it because history was still in flux and several different outcomes were still possible. With Trump however we're now locked into one specific timeline.

We always had this side to us, fought a civil war over it.

It's been obvious since at least 2016 that this is where we're headed, though I didn't think it would happen this quickly.

I really don't think we're fascist. We're something too close to it, though.

The real sad part of all of this is because all this violent fervor was born because a black man became president. Half the country lost its fucking mind.

What we need now is a strong Democrat party. (Or any strong opposition party) Not the spineless do-nothing one that one minute tries to make Republican-senpai notice them, the next they seem to just expect support without trying.
I have zero hopes. Democrats had every opportunity to stop this shit from happening, and didn't do anything about anything.

The resolution of the civil war was a no-win scenario.

Rejecting the slave states, would've made them a sovereign nation able to continue slavery.
Admitting the slave states back to the union, amounted to an act of welcoming racists to return to the US.

Longer than that. Christo-fascist groups such as the John Birch Society and Heritage Foundation have been working on this since the late 70s/early 80s. They play the long game because they only need the pieces to fall in place and then win one more time. Trump gave them the USSC because people couldn't bring themselves to vote for Clinton, he gave them a party yielding their Congressional power and authority, and so their moment finally came.

No but he IS deporting folks to prisons in other nations, banned reporters for not submitting to his every whim and other things so he's only a few steps away from all of those things, and he's only been back in power for a little more then a month and JUST got his full staff installed....

You realize that Germany didn't have death camps, nor mass imprisonment of political enemies the day the Nazi party became the largest party, or the day Hitler was sworn in as chancellor, right?

They took time to get to that point. Waiting till we are at the endgame of Fascism till we call a spade a spade isn't doing anyone any favors.

We already have the overtly nationalistic rhetoric, the fear mongering over the 'other', the claim that Trump himself is the law. We have the authoritarian power grabs in play, and they don't have what amounts to a concentration camp in Guantanamo Bay for people who are allegedly illegal immigrants.

I imagine he'd love to. Donors and financial bullshit are probably the only things keeping him at bay. That and maybe he's worried people might like him 5% less, because that's all he really cares about.

I joked with my friend the other day that it's a good thing Trump probably has handlers and shit and is mostly a stooge, because he's so fucking stupid, he'd probably nuke Gaza, completely unaware that it'd hurt Israel (considering helping them would be the end goal of such a stupid act).

One thing I'm really scared of is what is going to happen in four years. Will there be a super January 6th? Will he refuse to leave? Will America just be a simmering stank hole crater of trash?

In hindsight, letting the slave states be their own nation may had been for the best. Slavery would had collapsed eventually anyway, and things there may had gradually improved. Meanwhile, the Union would be free to move much quicker into a more progressive direction without the South and its mentality holding it back.
