NG2 took my attention away, so I wasn't sure what the release vibes were like

People hated the idea of playing as anyone but Dante.
Most didn't come around to Nero until DmC came out, and now with 5 most seem to love Nero. Still not as much as Dante or Vergil, but he's not hated anymore.

Yeah, he wasn't quite well received, even though DMC4 was pretty damn good in the overall gameplay department above 3.

The downside to why people don't care much for 4 (aside from new protag) is the game was fairly small (like, the stuff you did with Nero, the moment you got in control of Dante you pretty much did the lot of it going the other direction).

Nero was as hated then as people hated Chuck Greene, Apollo Justice and Zero because at the time it felt like Capcom was eager to keep their iconic series's running but not have the flag ship protagonist in it anymore or more of a background character, kinda funny I think people treated Leon the same way in Resident Evil for a bit because he wasn't Chris and of course Ethan was despised by Chris and Leon fans

Nobody ever likes replacing the main character. At least at first.

Yet companies try it time and time again.

I don't think Leon got as much hate back then. Probably because Resident Evil 2 was THAT much more of a kickass upgrade from the first game.

I'm still not entirely sure if at this point people have learned to like Nero or if they just like having a different play style to switch to occasionally.

Like, in the next game if Dante got Nero's whole rev gimmick and weapons through some sort of gauntlet, would people even care if Nero wasn't in the game at all?

They'd probably be a little confused at the complete 180 from the ending of 5.

From what I've gathered, all the playable characters are distinct enough that each have their fans.
...Also, having kickass battle theme music attached to each one also helps (with Nero's and Vergil's being friggen lightyears ahead of everything heard in the entire franchise).

I loved the gameplay with nero.
Revving the sword and grabbing enemies with the arm..
It was great.

Nero was a cool at least, but his move set felt limited compared to Dante.

DMC4's gameplay is clearly crafted for Nero's grab ability and Dante is just plopped into it as an afterthought after the fact. Which sucks, because Dante's gameplay in the game is insane and so fucking good, but it just doesn't mesh well with the game where the answer to every threat is "grab it with your devil hand"

People didn't like Raiden in MGS2 either. Come Rising, now he's a fan favorite.

Though in Nero'a case, I think he was IMMENSELY helped by Donte in DmC. The best way to rehabilitate a hated protagonist is to make one right after that's WAY more hated.

He wasn't as hated as Raiden was in MGS2. I think Nero was known to be a character you'd play as not a bait and switch. I liked him immediately when I played as him but I never minded the backtracking in DMC4.

It was MGS4 when you started having people magically materialize who "always liked Raiden," but I honestly thought S4 had the weakest Raiden of the lot. Unless you count S3. Being overpowered really does very little to make up for being a straight-faced caricature of emo fifth graders.

Anyway, it's true that Rising has the best Raiden and it's not even close.

I never had a problem with him. It worked out better with 5 and the family dynamics at play there.

No, Leon has never really got that treatment. Maybe partly because lots of RE players started with 2 and then went back to 1 (or didnt).

Funny thing with RE1, it's been re-released (and remade and re-released) enough times that most people who did play RE2 could really have went back and played the first game (or played it a good bit after).

Isn't Capcom RE-remaking RE1 again? If so, it means it's gone full circle now!!!

I was ok with Nero since I knew Dante would return for the second half of the game. What I liked less than Nero was the backtracking.

Still better situation than MGS2 where you use Snake for only the tanker part.

It was pretty reminiscent of Raiden in MGS2

I think their biggest mistake with the story is never cluing people in that Bayonetta is a TITLE and not just a funky name.

But the Bayo games have always been about the pizazz and action. Don't think Platinum cared too much on how the story turns out, as long as they got to make cool shit happen.

Yeah, this is fair enough. Should've pulled a DMC where the OG will always be around and new mechanics and playstyles are used for new characters. Though they've definitely been slowly trying to push Nero as the new main character regardless.

At the VERY beginning, people thought he was a Dante redesign. Then the developers clarified and media amplified "no no, that's not Dante it's our new hero Nero"
