As in, before the Yellow version, and without using Game Shark/Game Genie.

Not sure why they thought people would be willing to trade away their Starters, in an era without breeding.

that shit completely broke every game I tried to use it on though. It had codes for pokemon G/S where you could capture trainer pokemon and I don't think I ever made it past the first gym before it broke and I had to erase my save.

I had gold and silver and I only did this to silver. Gold had my real game.

I owned both red and blue and two gameboys because I had an older brother so I easily filled out the Pokedex. Didn't use all three starters in a team though if that's what you mean.

I ended up owning both Blue and Red versions, my siblings each had a gameboy also, and one of them bought a link cable for some other game, so I traded myself to get one of everything on at least one file.

I bought Blue and traded a friend another game for Red when he gave up on the game. I had a link cable and borrowed my brother's Gameboy to trade the starters from Red, first from my friend's original file then after resetting the game. My friend didn't care for the game and didn't make it far, so resetting the file was no real loss. I then did it several more times so I had starters to trade to others.

Yeah? Like, everyone did. There were multiple people had a second copy of the game + everyone had a cable.

I had Red, my brother had Blue. We both had all of the starters pretty quickly.

Not R/B but my brother and I had Gold and Silver and between the daycare at Goldenrod and resetting one game, we were able to have three legitimate starters in our own games each

First 3 gens, when I played the second game I would trade and restart my game so I had all 3 starters for my playthrough.

I was the type of kid that had two Gameboys and both versions of a game.

Myself, and plenty of other people. It was pretty easy. You just start a game, get up to where you can trade, and trade the starter to a friend. Do that a few times so you and the friend each have all three starters.

I did it via Stadium yeah. Ive never traded anyone for any poke game though.

Red and Blue? one kid who had 2 gameboys, copies of red and blue, and a link cable. at the time he was the only kid at school who had a link cable.

by the time Gold and Silver got released, almost everyone had all 3 starters or some combo of 2 starters.... except me, my neighbor offered to do breeding/trading to get all 3 starters, but only if I loaned him my gameboy + Gold copy so he could do it.
I loaned it to him, and when I got it back, he had traded all of my pokemon over to his game for things like rattata and pidgey.

That was like 25 years ago and it still upsets me cus I had a shiny gastly. I didn't know what shiny was at the time, just that it did a sparkle and was blue. and other than red gyarados, I have not encountered a shiny since.

Quite frequently. I had blue. My bestie growing up had red. We had a link cable. We did many a resets so we could both have all starters.

Did you guys not do the yank-the-cable-and-dupe glitch? We abused the shit out of that at my school we were running around with all starters multiple legendaries/hitmons/full teams of Mewtwo etc and nobody had a gameshark

I grew up in a very deprived area. Link cables were common.

Not really, no. Closer to an overexaggeration. In literal terms there was only something like 10-20 cables out of ~60 kids (depending on how many people brought theirs). Enough that you basically never were anywhere close to having to struggle to find one.

I grew up in the closest thing to the ghetto without actually being the ghetto (probably would be considered by some standards to be though) and everyone had a link cable and a gameboy. It was as common as having a TV.

Nope, though my brother and myself could have done some back and forth trading.

Going outside the question or I should say after Yellow, Pokmon Stadium had a main game where winning gives at random the three starters, Eevee, Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, Omanyte and Kabuto.

Plus if you do the trading without yourself, you can put Pokmon in storage at a Stadium lab and take them from it. Same with items including TMs if you wanted to make a supply of them.

Huh. I lived in a poor area, but not that poor. It was common for siblings to share gameboys. Maybe it was more a cultural thing.

Yeah sometimes I think gaming companies forget:
- Their own country (Japan mostly) is smaller so potential trading or additional players aren't a guarantee. Similar error as the PC Engine being marketed in major cities which is sensible in a smaller country whereas the TurboGrafx 16 which took the same approach means that it doesn't get the same amount of coverage.

- That some people play video games to avoid socializing or coping with social insecurity. Might have trouble making friends, but taking down Dr. Wily or various Demon Kings, no problem.

I actually had a legitimate complete Pokedex in Red once! Excluding Mew, of course. I had both versions because I was a spoiled rotten brat, so I was able to just trade over missing stuff from Blue. That was my first true gaming achievement~

...and then my cousin saved over it, after being told repeatedly specifically not to save due to a history of saving over my files. Sure learned my lesson there. I think that's about the point I stopped being willing to let others handle my devices.

My first "legit" 100% Pokedex was in Gold, including a Mew and a Celebi. My logic at the time, being thirteen years old, was that "I'm not cheating if somebody else uses the GameShark in their game!"

We picked one on the playground to be the "sacrifice" so everyone, including that person, got traded all 3 starters.
