[Rubio] said he hopes the Russians will agree to the ceasefire, but if they don't "we'll unfortunately know what the impediment is to peace here"

In the time it would take to unpack this statement (how much shade is Rubio throwing at his boss with this over making his job that much harder; is he really stupid enough to not already know the answer; etc), Trump will have already forced him to contradict it.

I think the absolute best case scenario (by giving literally every benefit of the doubt that Trump is actually negotiating in good faith) is that it's giving a Russia a way out of the war without admitting defeat.

Holding peace talks without Ukraine & proposing a ceasefire without Russia. At least Trump is consistent.

This Likely isn't going to happen considering theyre still in the middle of a battle for Kursk currently. Then there was the drone strike into Moscow recently on top of this.

But even if that was the case Trump just unfroze aid to Ukraine. So giving them time to regroup and re-arm makes less than zero sense.

As painful as Trump is, America is Ukraine's biggest ally. They have to roll over

i think Zelenskyy is hoping when Russia breaks the ceasefire, the US stops being stupid.

However as other users say, they won't.

Basically Zelenskyy has no good moves here. Just the least bad ones

Trump doesn't care about the shooting either. He just wants to be seen as making some kind of "great deal" in this mess (and personally profiting from it, of course).

It's a smart move, likely the strategy Zelensky has agreed with European leaders in his recent whirlwind diplomacy tour.

Think it through, the Europeans have refrained from saying what they really think, because that would cause Trump to double down, he always does (also avoids immediate tariffs, diplomacy has many angles).

US shipments and intelligence resume at a time they are sorely needed.

Trump gets something he wants, but it's only useful if the Russians agree to a ceasefire (something they are unlikely to do at a time they are making gains on the battlefield).

It's a potential wedge to drive between Putin and Trump, if Putin won't agree, Trump looks foolish.

A lot of this is likely attractive to Rubio too, he's no Russia fan, even if he's eating a lot of shit at the moment to keep his job.

Now, this may all be for naught, if the hold Putin has over Trump is too strong, but at least we'll all know where we stand at that point, and time will have been bought.

I think this last point is crucial. Ukraine and Europe need time.

It's clear to all the US under Trump is now a bad actor in this mess, and is an enemy of both Ukraine and Europe.

But nothing good comes out of saying this any earlier than necessary.

Good. Lets end this now. Im so sick of war. I think most of us have war fatigue by this point. Too much death. Too much destruction of the planet. Send Russia home and go back to living life again. Fuck war.

It's actually a savvy move on his part.

The ceasefire applies to "air and artillery", which are the main methods that Russia was using to hammer Ukrainian positions (particularly civilians). And while a ceasefire would allow Russia to regroup, it would allow the same for Ukraine, particularly in Kursk where their supply lines are constantly being harried by Russian attacks. If they have the chance to dig in and fortify Kursk, it throws a major wrench in Russia's plans.

Russia's endgame here is clear - they'll sell Trump a deal of, "Ukraine gives us all the land we've taken from them and you drop your sanctions and, and. as a concession from our side, we'll drop the demands that they hand over the territory we haven't taken yet." Trump's dumb enough to take that deal, but it only works if Ukraine doesn't still have Kursk; if they do, they can demand a land-swap and Russia really doesn't have much ground to refuse. For that reason, Russia absolutely does not want to freeze the conflict and/or start negotiations until they've driven the Ukrainians out of Kursk.

For Zelensky, agreeing to the ceasefire allows aid to resume, which Ukraine badly needs to keep fighting, and if Russia declines (which they have since indicated they will) it puts Zelensky in the position of pointing out that he was willing to accept peace but Russia is not. Trump will now be facing pressure to "put up or shut up" on his threat to up sanctions on Russia if they're proving resistant to peace talks. At the very least, this significantly eases the pressure on Ukraine.
