A Hall of Fame girls basketball coach in upstate New York apologized Sunday after being fired for violently yanking the ponytail of his star player and appearing to berate her following an emotional loss.

The incident unfolded after Northville High School lost to La Fargeville, 43-37, in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class D final Friday night at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy.

Northvilles Hailey Monroe, the Falcons star senior who scored 12 points in the loss, was standing with her teammates after the game and appeared to be crying.

Cameras then captured Falcons coach Jim Zullo coming from behind and pulling Monroes hair.

Zullo appeared to yell at Monroe before teammate Ahmya Tompkins intervened. Tompkins is the coachs great-niece, The Daily Gazette of Schenectady and other local news outlets have reported.

The Northville Central School District is aware of, and deeply disturbed by, the conduct of the Coach of the Girls Varsity basketball team during the Class D New York State championship game, the school district said on social media Saturday.

The District is committed to ensuring that this type of behavior has no place within our programs, and we will continue to uphold the values of respect and integrity that our athletes, families and community expect and deserve. This individual will no longer be coaching for the Northville Central School District.

In a statement obtained by NBC affiliate WNYT of Albany, Zullo apologized for his actions and said he wished he could take them back.

"I want to offer my sincerest apologies to Hailey and her family, our team, the good folks at Northville Central Schools and our community," he said. "As a coach, under no circumstance is it acceptable to put my hands on a player, and I am truly sorry."

Members of the districts board of education declined to comment beyond the social media statement.

This is now a personnel matter, board President Carolyn Wilcox wrote in an email. We are turning our attention to our young athletes to ensure their wellbeing at this very difficult time.

Zullo is a member of the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame, having previously led Shenendehowa High School to the large school Class A state title in 1987.

His son, Sam Zullo, is the girls basketball coach at Simsbury High School in Connecticut.

Sam Zullo led the Trojans to the Class L title last season, in a bittersweet moment as his mother and Jim Zullo's wife, had died months earlier from cancer.

Jim Zullo had come out of retirement to coach at Northville at the urging of his wife so he could stay occupied, the family has previously said.

At this time, Im not comfortable individually commenting on anything," Sam Zullo said in a statement to NBC News on Monday. "I need to help my father and our families work through this.

In his statement on the incident Friday night, the elder Zullo expressed gratitude for having had the chance to coach the basketball team, "especially last season, which was a difficult time for our family."

He said he was proud of the girls and wished them well.

This was the second consecutive season Northville, a small school with about 235 sixth- through 12-grade students, fell just short in the state final, last year being edged out by Hammond in the title game.

Northville HS is a less than 60 miles north of the state Capitol in Albany and about 150 miles south of the U.S.-Canadian border.

Yup. You never make contact with a student.

It's also telling that they freaking lost, there's nothing to be fixed about it in the short-term, and instead of consoling them, he immediately went to berating. There is a time and place to look at the tape and figure out if someone could have played better, but it is not in the immediate aftermath of the game, and it sure as hell doesn't involve making violent physical contact

ngl, if I ever saw anyone do that to one of my daughters, I'd flash red with rage and try to absolutely destroy the coach before even articulating a single coherent thought.

Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

I think the coach later said the daughter cursed him out after he told the team to stand in the handshake line, but yeah, there's no reason for this.

That's a reason to boot her off the team and discipline her through the appropriate channels, not physically attack her

The coach's family member (great-niece) was the one trying to stop him, not the one who was attacked.

I don't see that written in the article quoted above, he must be referring to another source reporting on the matter. But either way...making physical contact with a student in such a manner is not OK

It's right here :

Her teammate is a real one though. You can see her in the video immediately get in there and tell the coach that's not okay.

Fair, next, don't do that shit. And kudos to his great-niece for intervening.

Also, I think it's weird that they still refer to him as a "Hall of Fame coach" because he coached a different high school that won the state championship back in 1987.
