Remember the super stripped-down Lumines image that would fit on the stock memory stick?

We got homebrew launchers in a matter of months, iirc. Emulators were ported soon after. Good times.

man, I miss the psp. those were great times, its definitely my fav handheld.

I guess mine still works, but it needs a new battery.
tbh, I'm surprised the battery lasted as long as it did, cus the day I got it, I did that thing where you open it, scratch off one of the connectors, and then redraw it with a pencil. I got it in 2008, and the battery still held a charge until around 2015ish.

Mine still works, though I regret getting digital games since there isnt anyway to transfer them from the ps3 to the psp now.

I mocked the psp when it came out and rightly so; the umd is a garbage format and that stupid analog nub was painful to even look at let alone use for games. However, I'll always appreciate the second life it got in the late 2000s/early 2010s when it started to get a whole bunch of quality RPGs. Lunar, Ys, even trails the sky. The psp (technically DS) is what introduced me to Ys and made me love it, to the point that I'm now finally playing Ys 9 and enjoying it. It's become my favorite action rpg series easily.

I think some of the best jrpg games that exist were on handhelds but I hate handhelds and have always been a console gamer. Its why the Switch exited me because Id finally get access to some of those handheld game series that would now be on a console.

Funny thing is I have never had my Switch hooked up to a TV. I exclusively play in handheld mode since it's so much more convenient.

Remember the embarrassing attempt at viral marketing some firm hired by Sony tried with PSP? They set up a web site that they tried to pass off as being made by a kid trying to convince his parents to buy him a PSP, accompanied by this video where the "kid" is clearly like 30:

Yeah I know most people use their Switch like you. I have it hooked up always and play with the pro controller. I dont care about portability and Im never using that tiny little screen but even if I did Id still use a pro controller and not those shitty joycons.

My favorite game on PSP was Mega Man Powered Up. They did so much more with it than just a simple remake. You could unlock the ability to play through the game as any of the robot masters, plus a bunch of challenge levels, plus a level editor. I wish they'd port it to Switch or something.

It's amazing how long a hacked PSP remained the king of portable emulation. It took like 8-10 years before another device was arguably better since it can play PS1 games semi-natively.

There are a handful of games I wanted to try for that that never escaped the platform.

Mega Man Maverick Hunter X
Mega Man Powered Up
Metal Gear Acid 1&2 (technically these also had ports for like flip-phone or something but GL with that) and Portable Ops

Could never justify buying one for five minor installments when I was in which school lol. Now I can't justify spending adding all that to my backlog.

yeah, IIRC the first iPhone came out in 2007

the DS and PSP were in competition for "handheld that can do more than just play games"

seriously, remember all the "games" for the DS that were basically just apps?

I'll never forget my surprise after my "PSP" arrived. Should have never trusted those survey and referral sites to send me a legit piece of hardware. The iPod minis never arrived. Why would a real PSP?

At least now I can look back and laugh at the PopStation Portable.

Hell, there was even the N-Gage, which prided itself as a handheld that could also make calls and do other non-game stuff.
