I hear this a lot with popular songs. "It's catchy but I got tired of hearing it" "I used to like it but then I heard it a thousand times" "It's pretty good but then it was everywhere"

...do people not obsessively listen to newly discovered songs they like over and over? I'm pretty sure anytime I find a new song I like, I listen to it at least a few dozen times over the next week.

I feel like it's a weird dodgy way of saying they don't like a song.

This is what Imagine Dragons became. I had nothing really out for them, but I swear I'd put ESPN on Imagine Dragons, I'd go to the mall, Imagine Dragons. I'd put on the internet Imagine Dragons. If only I could wish it all away. I actually like one of their songs because it makes me think of just being wrecked, but that song never played anywhere I guess. They still suck tho but better than Nickelback.

I've had the same bands 4 albums on repeat almost non-stop when listening to music in the last year. Still not sick of any of it.

I tend to go through phases with music. Find a new band, obsess over them for a bit, find new band, repeat.

I get sick of bands I do like at times, it's just sometimes the world makes you want to think this music is the best thing ever. Hahah

I did burn out on Sunny Day Real Estate, before. Heh it's different when the burn out is by choice.

That's all well and good for new stuff that you really, actively, like.

If it's something you just passively like (in a "Yeah, this is pretty good, but I'm not gonna go seeking it out" way), it's a lot easier to get burned out on it.

There's also the element of agency. Choosing to listen to a song a lot, and having other people play a song at you a lot are two very different experiences.

A radio station in my area had a call in poll, for the top 10 or so songs of the day, and for a long time "Ice, Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice kept winning. So one night, they played "Ice Ice Baby" for 4~6 hours straight, in the hopes of killing it off. I can't tell you if it worked or not, because I stopped listening to their poll show, since messing with the poll like that made them untrustworthy to my youthful mind.

It has to be something I choose to listen to over and over. If not by choice, it's annoying.

If I never hear an ominous character appear on screen to Thunderstruck again it'll be too soon. It's absolutely a song I would like if it didn't get played into the ground.

I don't find the repeat into it's funny trope works for me. This is an old radio trope even for talk radio. If I think it's funny, I'll graduate into thinking it has a charm but beating the joke into the ground, eh I haven't heard the Benny Hill theme in awhile. But no one on the radio on the internet uhh live plays the Benny Hill theme for over 20 minutes.

There are worse examples than Benny Hill for sure, it's just one I thought of heh.

Hm, fair enough. I don't know that I've ever gone from not disliking a song to disliking it just from hearing it too much but, I dunno, I suppose it might not be something that would come to mind right away. I can actually think of a few songs that I originally disliked and started to like more after hearing it a bunch.

It's a bigger issue if you like work in retail and the business is always playing the same shit.

Life after Love - Cher
Smooth - Rob Thomas and Santana
The Way - Fastball
Barbie Girl - Aqua

TC just discovered why the same song doesn't stay number 1 forever

This is why I hate pop music it's literally designed to get stuck in your head. Also I don't obsessively listen to a new song I look up the artist if I've never heard of them or at the very least check out the album the song is from.

I dont. I dont choose to listen to any song a few dozen times a year, let alone in a few weeks.

in the defense of those that listen to the same song, it helps get them out of tough times

at the same time gotta reroute n listen to what else is available. who knows

If I never hear Under the Bridge again, that would be just fine with me. Same with Smells Like Teen Spirit. Neither belong on a classic rock station.

Most cases people say this its in environments where they don't control the music.

For example I got sick of hearing "Badguy" but I'd still run into it in advertisements, radio in the grocery store or my sister playing it on repeat to the point I never want to hear it again.
