Congrats, Southampton.

Your automatic demotion down to the Championship League, with seven games left on the schedule (almost two months worth of games left) after losing to Tottenham today is now the earliest that has ever happened in the league. They are also 22 (7 wins and 1 draw) standing points behind the last safe spot for next season, Wolverhampton. In comparison, 07-08 Derby County team (considered the worst team ever in the Premier League with 11 standing points at the end of the season) didn't get mathematically sent down until six games left in the season.

Now we just need to see if they avoid the 11 points level (They're at 10 points) or avoid giving up more goals than last year and demoted Sheffield United's dubious record of 104 goals allowed (They're at 74 goals allowed).

How bad is the championship where all 3 clubs that came up last year are immediately relegated without any much distance from the non relegation zone teams?

The established clubs in the Premier League have so much more money now.

Even smaller teams like Bournemouth, Brentford, Brighton, and Fulham have been around enough to be able to spend 40m on a player, and have some top talent from Europe and S. America.

Promoted teams just can't compete with that. Or at least it would be a massive gamble and future points deductions if they did.

I reckon the promoted teams are more or less doomed every season for the foreseeable future.

Is a team guaranteed to get relegated every year or can the leagues remain unchanged in certain circumstances?

Southampton got relegated two seasons ago and immediately won the championship and got promoted back, only to get relegated again lol.

3 teams get swapped out with the lower division every year.

Luton ran out of gas by the end of the season last year and have forgotten to put gas back in the tank this year. Burnley and Sheffield United are in the mix to go right back up next season.
