SPARTANBURG, S.C.
White House Trade Advisor Peter Navarro criticized BMW's business model in Spartanburg, South Carolina, stating it is detrimental to the U.S. economy and national security.

"This business model where BMW and Mercedes come in to Spartanburg, South Carolina, and have us assemble German engines and Austrian transmissions. That doesn't work for America. It's bad for our economics. It's bad for our national security. We want them to come here," Navarro said.

In response, a spokesperson for BMW's manufacturing plant in Spartanburg highlighted the facility's significant contributions.

"Plant Spartanburg is an eight million-square-foot facility with three body shops, two paint shops, two assembly halls, a metal stamping facility for body panels, an investment of more than fourteen point eight billion dollars," the spokesperson said. "And eleven thousand highly skilled associates making fifteen hundred vehicles dailyfour hundred thousand a yearwith parts from hundreds of suppliers across the United States."

The spokesperson added, "We export more vehicles from the United States than we import into the country. Plant Spartanburg generates a total economic impact of twenty six point seven billion dollars for our state, supporting nearly forty three thousand jobs and $3.1 billion dollars in wages and salaries."

The company is advocating for a transatlantic agreement that promotes growth.

More local article so not as long.

Please explain this like im 5. Trump wants crap built here. Foreign car makes like BMW , Mercedes, Toyota, etc already build most of their mainstream vehicles here( with the more expensive stuff built overseas and shipped here). But we can't have that either.....cause national security? So what, he wants a German car maker to turn into a U.S. one? Fucking how? And would that help GM and Ford who already build Cadillac and Lincoln? Wouldn't damaging them also be detrimental to "national security?"

If the BMW plant goes away ( along with the Volvo plant we just built in Charleston) the amount of damage done to S.Cs economy would be..uh... catastrophic. But I guess that's the point.

doublethink

holding two extremely contradictory views at the same time as your brain melts into mush

this is the signature of Trump and MAGA but the term comes from 1984 where big brother used it to control the population

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doublethink

Doublethink is a process of indoctrination in which subjects are expected to simultaneously accept two conflicting beliefs as truth, often at odds with their own memory or sense of reality.[1] Doublethink is related to, but differs from, hypocrisy.
George Orwell coined the term doublethink as part of the fictional language of Newspeak in his 1949 dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four.[2] In the novel, its origins within the citizenry are unclear; while it could be partly a product of Big Brother's formal brainwashing programmes,[i] the novel explicitly shows people learning doublethink and Newspeak due to peer pressure and a desire to "fit in", or gain status within the Partyto be seen as a loyal Party Member. In the novel, for someone to even recognizelet alone mentionany contradiction within the context of the Party line is akin to blasphemy, and could subject that person to disciplinary action and the instant social disapproval of fellow Party Members.[2]

Navarro is not satisfied that that the cars are assembled in the US by Americans.
He wants the cars to be produced from the ground up in the US.
That obviously means sourcing every part and component and the raw materials from the US, which would upend the established supply chain and take years to set up, if it can even be done at all.
Needless to say, the idea is completely idiotic.
But that is to be expected form an imbecille who fabricated a fake expert that he could quote frequently in his own books.

Maybe more like... he has come home with a bag of seeds and a calf in tow, and when his hungry kids asks why he has not brought them food from the local market, he says that from now they will be growing their own food, and will have well-done steak with freshly cooked vegetables as soon as the seeds have turned into harvestable crops and the calf has matured into an adult cow.

Peter Navarro is a dumbass. Thats all you really need to know. Trump likes him because, unlike most economists, Navarro loves tariffs.

You know how the US is losing it's shit over the one widely used popular social media platform that doesn't come from a US company?
Well, just like tech services, now that the US wants to go back to manufacturing they want every major manufacturer to be US owned.
