Reminds me of when I used to work at Target and when people would hear you get a 10% employee discount plus the 5% redcard discount they would think that means you're getting a 15% discount. Well, no because the 10% is taken off first then the 5% is taken off of that already discounted price, so it works out to a combined 14.5% discount.

Maybe after personally losing so much money on the stock market more people will learn how percentages work. E.g. if your stock drops 50% you don't get that money back if it then rises 50% from the lower value, at that point you need +100% of the new value just to get back to where you started before the drop.

I've spent enough time video gaming to know that it really needs to be specified which value the second % adjustment is being applied to -- the original value or the value modified after the first % adjustment -- because the question can go either way. Mathematically, sure, the original statement might be correct, but that is not always how something is intended to be parsed. It's basically the same sort of problem that can result from not knowing whether percentage modifiers are additive or multiplicative -- games can and have used both.

Please tell me that guy is just trolling. I refuse to believe somebody who is, presumably, fully educated doesn't understand how such basic ass percentage maths works.

I am officially speaking uneducated in maths and even I know how that works.

You can sometimes parse it out, such as with 'Damage Reduction'. If the bonuses are in the 1%-5% range it is probably actually reducing the damage you take by that specified amount. If the bonuses are in the 10%-50% range then they're probably using the Damage Taken = 1/(1+% Damage Reduction) formula. E.g. 100% damage reduction means you take 1/2 damage.

Percentages are scalers, always. Just because some videogames incorrectly use the concept doesn't change that.

Basic percentage math will tell you that you need a surplus to recover lost revenue in a period.

So you could have the number 420, for example.
Then you figure out half of 420 by multiplying it by 0.5, 0.5 just being 1/2 in decimal form. You would then get 210.

The result is now mutated into 210. You got rid of half your stash.

If repeat the procedure, you have half of your half.
