Yeah I would definitely add Telamon to the shortlist of party members. Everyone else is a guest.

Right, yeah, Cid Telamon is definitely a party member, too. Blanked on that one. Don't recall Gav actually being with your party on the field more than once, maybe twice.

Moderate XVI spoilers abound here

I'm in the endgame now, and while Gav has played a major supporting role as a scout throughout the game, he has fought alongside the party exactly once: when we reached Ash, and Byron exactly twice: Dhalmekian desert and hidden port off the coast of Kanver before embarking to Ash. Technically Wade has fought with the party thrice: once each with Clive and Joshua in the prologue, and once with Cid the Outlaw after the second time skip.

He's not my favorite, but if we're counting Gav and Byron in the guest category then Wade absolutely needs to be in the discussion even if no one cares to see him in the entrance field!

I personally find it odd to have Jenova listed as the secondary antagonist over say Rufus in FF7.

Rufus is way way better but it's definitely Jenova. Rufus is mostly irrelevant for the rear two thirds of the game. Jenova Synthesis (?) is literally the boss before Final Sephiroth

Secondary antagonist of VII is Hojo I feel like

I'm more hesitant to count FFXVI's guest characters than I am a game like FFIV's, because you fully control the characters from the latter and never control or equip the former. Plus, you can fully equip and interact with all the FFIV characters too. That's different from some of the guest characters that don't permanently join that you can't equip in FFVI, like Banon or ????? who remain as guests. Similar with FFXII where characters just join for a short time and fight in the background but never join.

I guess if you wanna count some of the more major characters in FFXVI, fine, but I don't think someone who joins for a short time counts.

It's even less Hojo than Rufus! Hojo has like that tower thing towards the end and that's it.

I hesitate to even call Jenova a secondary villain when she's just an Eldritch Abomination Sephiroth is using for his own purposes and he occasionally throws it at you. It doesn't really have a plan or goals of its own. You barely interact with Jenova as itself, only when it wears Sephiroth's face.

I'd call Shinra as a whole the secondary villain, with Rufus and Hojo as the faces.

I just find it hard to consider Jenova even much of a character, which I'd say the same of Necron. I don't know, I just feel that list should either not contain those characters or be more subjective. Jenova is n not likely to ever make this contest, and even if she did... see Necron.

I dunno, I'd say Hojo is up there, for sure. He has unsavory links to multiple characters, including Cloud. His mad acts propel several things forward throughout the game - those experiments are key.

Though, I'd just as soon say Hojo, Jenova, and Rufus are all up there. I've never really tried to classify any single character as directly beneath Sephiroth in the chain of unscrupulous command.

And yes, Necron is not the secondary villain. He's the token final boss. The secondary villain is either Garland or Brahne.

I'd just be a little subjective in terms of what's more relevant in SMFFFC itself also. Rufus has a top 10 finish if I recall, even if his strength has waned without certain users of the past.

The thing with XVI is that certain characters are specifically listed as guests. Wade is one of them, but only when he joins the third time. Gav and Byron aren't. I'd list him over Theo and Shula, but I'd put him behind everyone else.

And Gav was around three times. He joins for the fight in Rosaria where Torgal transforms for the first time, and also for the fight in the hidden port against the Slepnir clones.

He does, and Sir Tyler does too. I think all the guest characters except Otto and Tarja have little sprites.

Tiamat and Aevis don't either, but nobody remembers them anyway.

Normalize hating on bad characters and celebrating when they get eliminated in SMFFFC again

Jenova is more of a tool/plot device than an antagonist

VII's secondary antagonist is Shinra. The company as a whole and the agents/employees of jt.
