You see, owning the libs is more important than having rights.

"Yes, but there's one thing you didn't take into account: gay/trans people make me uncomfortable, and colored people make me feel scared! I'd trade all my rights and freedoms to make sure these groups are as oppressed and segregated as humanly possible, in the most inhumane ways possible!"

I dont get it either, but some Americans have comprehension skills that are best described as sub-brick. Many might not even be aware that they have these rights.

If this is the case, wouldn't you expect Trump to enjoy the largest support among young voters? The people who went to school at the tail end of this long erosion? The people closest to having been in school?

But evidence suggests basically the opposite: Trump does worst among young voters, and his best age groups are those over 45.

If I was to build a theory around this evidence, it would be that those who didn't grow up with computers around them were not prepared to deal with the bombardment of information that comes with social media. Discerning fact from fiction on the internet is a skill that younger generations learned through practice that older generations missed out on.

There's polling that shows Trump's popularity declining with Boomers, but rising with Gen Z.

Except Gen Z, the youngest voting block, shifted heavily towards Trump this past election, as did their parent generation Gen X. It was Millennials and their parents, Boomers, who came out for Harris.

These people only really care about having more rights than others so as long as the guy they support is going to harm some minorities they're afraid of more than they'll harm them then they're super cool with losing rights.

what you're seeing is the end result of ~50 years of a handful of very rich but upsettingly stupid people propagandizing a severely maltreated populace.

it's not any one thing, it's a hundred different things that have been stacked up, one bad, greedy decision at a time

and it's going to be worse as we shift into an era of outright disinformation. The internet is becoming AI-optimized delusional slop. News is optimized for clicks and engagement over facts. Study is frowned upon. Skill is frowned upon.

There are ways to dig out of it, none of them are fast, all of them are difficult, and none of the powers that be seem particularly willing to implement because it is less of a priority over making money

Trying to remember that quote where it goes something like:

"Man gave up his right to freedom, because Man is not that smart. He looked to another and said 'You rule over us and tell us what to do, for we are scared'. And so Man chose to be a slave to another."

Or something like that. Pretty sure I butchered it.

Fear has a lot to do with it. Fascist leaders rely on having some enemy they can point to that they claim is such a threat that we need to essentially suspend basic human rights in order to fight it.

Racist white American men have been around for over 200 years. Trump won because minorities and women joined them.
