This is what happens when a large section of men of the majority race become resentful and upset that they're not getting what they feel is their due. Happens throughout history.

I dont get it either, but some Americans have comprehension skills that are best described as sub-brick. Many might not even be aware that they have these rights.

I think it's a mistake to assume that other authoritarian regimes don't have organic supporters.

There are a lot of rights that some people don't care about having, but very much don't want others to use.

If this is the case, wouldn't you expect Trump to enjoy the largest support among young voters? The people who went to school at the tail end of this long erosion? The people closest to having been in school?

If I was to build a theory around this evidence, it would be that those who didn't grow up with computers around them were not prepared to deal with the bombardment of information that comes with social media. Discerning fact from fiction on the internet is a skill that younger generations learned through practice that older generations missed out on.

There's polling that shows Trump's popularity declining with Boomers, but rising with Gen Z.

These people only really care about having more rights than others so as long as the guy they support is going to harm some minorities they're afraid of more than they'll harm them then they're super cool with losing rights.

what you're seeing is the end result of ~50 years of a handful of very rich but upsettingly stupid people propagandizing a severely maltreated populace.

it's not any one thing, it's a hundred different things that have been stacked up, one bad, greedy decision at a time

and it's going to be worse as we shift into an era of outright disinformation. The internet is becoming AI-optimized delusional slop. News is optimized for clicks and engagement over facts. Study is frowned upon. Skill is frowned upon.

There are ways to dig out of it, none of them are fast, all of them are difficult, and none of the powers that be seem particularly willing to implement because it is less of a priority over making money

Millions of us are fighting to keep the rights we have and increase our rights. We are just losing that fight right now.

Trying to remember that quote where it goes something like:

Fear has a lot to do with it. Fascist leaders rely on having some enemy they can point to that they claim is such a threat that we need to essentially suspend basic human rights in order to fight it.

Racist white American men have been around for over 200 years. Trump won because minorities and women joined them.
