I disagree that it was unnecessary. I think Season 1 didn't show the true danger of the infected, so having the town this armed and fortified and STILL getting overrun really drives home how dire these people's situation is
Solid point.

I found it very strange and interesting that Kaitlyn Dever wasnt listed in the names during the opening theme, as part of the main cast. She instead gets a special guest credit thats listed after the episode ends, in both this episode and the last one.

Im assuming this means that we wont be seeing much of her at all for the rest of this particular season, except for maybe the season 2 finale if they split these next two seasons right at the theater cliffhanger, like in the game.

Phenomenal episode, probably my favorite one in the entire show so far. Even with knowing what was gonna happen, I was still violently shaking in severe anticipation and dread. Powerful stuff.

Listened to the podcast. Few interesting things I remember.

They had a crane set up to recreate the dance hall scene from the game perfectly, but it wasn't working. So the cinematographer grabbed the camera off the crane and did it herself.

Very mild spoilers: we're apparently going to get some more with Seth, the homophobic dude from the party. Flesh him out more.

They laugh at people saying that HBO wouldn't let them kill off Joel, mentioning that HBO is the network that aired Game of Thrones.

Troy Baker rather obliquely references the hate Laura Bailey got for playing Abby. He doesn't actually mention the harassment by name, but that she and Kaitlyn Dever are in many ways the bravest ones to step on the stage because they are playing a character that's so hated.

They talk about Through The Valley. Druckman might have talked about it before because it's about the game. He apparently wrote and shot a scene that didn't make it into the game where Ellie's in a room full of people she killed and plays the guitar. He was looking for a song to use and was looking at Johnny Cash songs when he came across a band that covered some of them which led him to an original song by one of its members, Shawn James.

They also talk about that using Ashley's cover of it has a double meaning in the show. Obviously it's a treat to the people who played the game, but it's almost like Ellie's mother is chiming in now that Ellie's lost the only other person who loved her that much.

Apparently YaBoyRoshi didn't expect them to kill Joel off. There's a bit in this video where Lupa is looking at him and Roshi says, "Cap. I'm not buyin' it just yet."

even though, as a fan of the game, I had some issues with the episode, I liked the part where Ellie was talking to Jesse saying something about how it's always going to be Ellie and Joel, and how that's not going to change.

that plus her crying over his body made the scene hit harder.

In the podcast, they mention that Ellie was kicked so hard she wasn't sure she'd live.

So she basically curled up to die next to Joel <_<

I'm so mad about that kick. It wasn't even needed. That guy was just an asshole. I hope he has a horrific death

Wasn't she already wounded and basically incapacitated? There was a brief fight when she came into the room and she ended up on the floor

It's just so baffling to me. He didn't seem out of character at all. If he was softer, it was the result of living five peaceful years in Jackson.

Yeah, I never played TLOU2 until 2023, and I really didn't get that criticism about Tommy and Joel giving their names out. They weren't the same Tommy and Joel from the first game. They were in a flourishing community which had invited strangers in and it had been 5 years since the first game. Joel had been a father again for 5 years.

Of course they were both going to be softer and more welcoming to people they didn't know.

I am late to the party, but want to post my agreement with this. My only real complaint about Season 1 was there were so few infected they didnt really feel like a threat. To me, that really diluted the stakes at the end. Infected being everywhere in the first game is one part what made the choice Joel was faced with at the end so meaningful.

The attack took care of that issue in a hurry. I liked it.

It's funny, people talking about the infected being more of a threat thanks to this episode and they are...but the reveal that they can freeze to death makes me further question why there are so many still around twenty-five years later.

Most of that is me questioning things from the game though. Like the fact there are still dangerous numbers of infected around the outskirts of Jackson just seems silly to me. I know they try to justify it with Tommy saying that they get roaming packs of them but still.

And then there are sealed buildings like the supermarket from the first episode or other buildings you see later on that are very close to inhabited areas. I found myself having a tough time suspending my disbelief that those buildings wouldn't have been cleared out by those settlements.

I suppose it's probably gameplay/story segregation? Like you see plenty of areas where fully equipped FEDRA squads were wiped out by a few infected, but Ellie and Joel can make it through those same areas fine. So maybe the infected are canonically so dangerous that even fully armed and prepped hunting parties wouldn't be able to clear out nests.

I'm a little envious some posters in here can get their parents to check out these kind of shows.

My parents is extremely picky about the stuff they regularly watch so most of the time where I am talking about a show and recommend something I kinda' get a "eh, thats nice" and that'll be that.

Yeah, I could get my dad to watch a few shows before he died, but my mom never really wants to watch anything other than Lifetime movies and Police Procedural #2583. Even me recommending shows that sound up her alley like Mindhunters usually just end up with her rewatching Criminal Minds for the hundredth time.

I did bring the up the possibility of watching the Ron Swanson episode last season...but it was only a few months after my dad died, so I figured that would be unwise <_<

Really trying to make this new girl into a cartoon villain lol. Destroys the entire town, then murders Joel after he saved her from certain death.

Hope they don't bother with a redemption arc bc it's pretty much impossible given her intro

Abby had absolutely nothing to do with the attack on Jackson. She woke some of them up, but they were going to wake up anyway like fifteen minutes later when they fucked with the roots. If anything she helped the situation by leading them away from the town for a while.
