I was in St. Louis last weekend visiting family. And we had pizza during one of the gatherings. I hadn't St. Louis style pizza in at least 15 years and my family was raving that this was some of the best in the city, so I thought "I'll give it a try, maybe I was too harsh last time".

Nope. That shit is disgusting and the fact that everyone was praising the pizza made me feel like I was going crazy. Thankfully my, non-St. Louisian mom was there and she was able to confirm that it was gross.

It's basically a cracker thin crust, an incredibly small amount of a really sweet red sauce and then covered in provel cheese. Provel essentially being an American cheese-style white cheese.

It's gross from a flavor, texture and mouth feel perspective.

Picture reminds me of my mom's homemade pizza, which I is the only pizza I don't care for.

I had a pizza in Atlanta and in Ontario, Canada. Sure it's not East Coast style, but I thought they were OK. Above average barely but I wouldn't go on Yelp, to say they sucked. I actually think the supposed deep dish of Chicago style is underwhelming. Now I opened the pizza flood gates.

Yeah it is not the fact that it is thin crust or tavern cut that's the problem. It's the awful ingredients that make St. Louis style pizza gross.

Thin crust and light sauce is great. I always get my pizza with light sauce 'cause far too many places basically make soup if you don't tell them not to. -_- But provel is disgusting. Get some quality mozz or provolone on there instead and it would be great.

I don't like thin crust at all. There needs to be something. The sauce is boss too. I just being in the North East haha I've had shittier pizza here than al the times I went up to Ontario or Atlanta once.

Im also not big on tavern style unless its super minimal without any weird drizzle. I cant get anything without hot honey these days

OK I may need to actually get my hands on a St Louis pizza and try it before I cast judgement. Now that someone brought up tavern style I just have no idea if I've had it anymore.

It's not just the crust style, it's also the Provel cheese. That tends to be the deal breaker for most people who don't like St Louis style.

Was in college early-mid 90's in Missouri and everybody raved about the local place with the St. Louis pizza. Tried that crap once, then went right back to ordering Domino's. Tasted better and was a hell of a lot cheaper ($5.50 for a medium 2 topping and a can of coke. I paid the extra buck to get deep dish)

It's not the "style" it's more the ingredients. Our sauce tends to be a bit sweeter and it uses provel cheese, which is a blend of cheddar, swiss, and provelone that has a pretty distinct melt and taste to it. As someone who loves it, it is definitely an acquired taste and having those low level opinions is ok. Not everyone has to like good stuff.

St. Louis style is great! Americans just can't appreciate it's exotic flavor.

I've had it before and I thought it tasted fine. I care more about what the toppings are on my pizza than I care about the style of the pizza.

We tried Imo's last year. It's possible it just takes some getting used to but neither of us liked it.

In a similar vein, I had the opportunity to go to Chicago late last month and try one of those famous deep dish pizzas. My reaction is it's kinda overhyped I think.

STL native here. I can dig a STL style pizza once in a great while, but only if it's hot and fresh. Once that cheese gets cool and rubberizes it's no good.
