I kind of loathe Lennon as both a person and as a musician.

I tend to like McCartney, Harrison, and Ringo from stuff they did outside of the Beatles than anything they did as part of the group.

I think people give them way too much credit for being musical geniuses, because they weren't innovators as much as they were synthesizers and popularizers. Harrison is the only one I really think of as being all that much of a really creative musician, and even that more later on. I get that they had a strong influence on many acts and styles of music that followed after them, but to some degree I think that was more a case of being the right people in the right place at the right time than it was something that literally could not exist without them. Basically, in a universe without The Beatles, somebody else would be The Beatles.

And honestly, when it comes to their style of music in that relative era? I like more songs from The Monkees than I do The Beatles.

I liked some of their music, but felt the music scene was oversaturated with them.

Paul comes off as a nice guy trying to pass as self-conscious, but he was an ass towards anyone messing with his vision. John was absolutely a pretentious ass with maybe a few good things to say outside of his music. Both of them treated George like shit, which led to a boiling point where he quit the band and they had to talk him into coming back just to finish their final studio album before the whole band would call it quits on a positive note.

Then years later Paul would be like "If I knew what he wanted, we might have stayed together longer." Paul? He told you, to your face, while y'all were being recorded on camera trying to prepare for a major live recording (source: Get Back for said recordings, Stephen Colbert for interview years later).

But at least Paul wasn't the one who abused his wife, or had separate hotel rooms just for his shoes, or anything else in-between.

Ringo was mostly just... there. One movie (Hard Day's Night) gave him a scene to try and stand out, but... again, just there. Like he just went with the path of least resistance while in the band, eventually told his son Zach never to become a drummer, and faded to relative obscurity while said son became a drummer anyways that filled in for The Who (and was good at it).

George was the closest the band had to a good guy. It is just a shame only two of his songs got recorded while he was with them.

I can't stand the Beatles. I find them to be inane, pseudo intellectual garbage. And the thing I hate even more, is that you can't criticize them without being called a 'troll'. And at best you get 'well you might not like them, but they basically inspired all modern music so if you like any music you have to respect them'. No. No I don't. Paul wrote childish nonsense. John was a POS. Ringo is a hack. George is ok, but over shadowed by so many other guitarists of the era.

There's so much great soul and so much great rock experimentation from that time and for some reason we put the shallowest artists on the top of the pedestal.

Pink Floyd inspired modern music more imo, between their shows inspiring how concerts work across all genres and their electronic/sampling pioneering electronic music as a whole I think he's are quietly more influential. Also Dark Side is more iconic than any Beatles album, it's probably the most iconic album of all time across all genres, there was a reason it was on the billboard for 30+ years, which is just ridiculous and no other album comes close.

To be fair, they literally did invent and/or pioneer a lot of things related to music as we know it.

The Beatles pushed boundaries in recording techniques, songwriting, and artistic presentation, paving the way for new musical styles and genres. They experimented with instrumentation, introduced new sounds (like feedback), and explored various genres, including rock and roll, pop, and psychedelia.

Not much left to say. Insanely pretentious, and put on a pedestal as Gods of Music. Maybe they were innovative for their time, but I believe Paranoid puts it best in that it would have been someone else if it weren't them. Also, how much of that influence was because of their innovations to the craft and how much was "Emulation of Authority"?

If you want to have fun, just accuse the people who say things like that of racism, because they're actively minimizing the accomplishments of all the obscure black artists The Beatles stole ideas from... that they basically got credit for because it was more palatable to attribute it to young white guys in the climate of the 1950s/early 1960s (see also Elvis, Buddy Holly, and most of the rest of the roots of "rock and roll" as a genre - including many of the Beatles' own admitted early influences).

Or for real fun, (accurately) point out that most of their cultural influence (especially early in their career) stems less from their music and more from the fact that they were cute young boys that teen girls could crush on. They were basically a boy band.

While I think all the various critiques of them are valid, I place their importance in music very high. They're more than a boy band - my stereotype of 'boy bands' would be that they don't even write their music. The Beatles had two musicians that individually wrote more hits than the vast majority of musicians, and a third member that ended up doing so too.

Quite honestly, I think you could probably drag a 'hater' through the discography and have them admit to liking dozens of songs. There are few artists that have put out the same quantity of songs/hits especially within such a small time frame.

I would argue that PO's interpretation of their 'cuteness' owing more to their success than their musicality to be inaccurate. If anyone else is familiar with their BBC tapes, the list of songs they knew outside of their own was looooonggggg. They gained fame in Hamburg by playing clubs constantly, without days off, and the dedication showed in how tight they were as musicians. Plenty of bands at the time did not have anywhere near the same work ethic.

In 1961, The Beatles traveled to Hamburg, Germany for a series of performances, first at the Indra Club and then at the nearby Kaiserkeller club. During this residency, The Beatles performed 104 consecutive nights without a night off. On weekdays, they performed 4.5 hours of music during each of their 74 weekday shows.

There were plenty of other 'cute' 'boybands' that did not put in the extreme amount of work that the Beatles did - in terms of their massive catologues of covers, their push into original music and the quality of their playing. I'm sure their 'look' had something to do with their rise to fame, but it really wasn't the primary part. They wouldn't have done remotely as well if their playing wasn't on the level that it is. Try playing the bassline to "I Saw Her Standing There". Paul is ripping the entire time.
