Also these, and also Katnip from the Herman & Katnip cartoons. Katnip was clearly villainous, but he was so dumb that he'd probably fail to catch Herman even if he didn't retaliate at all, much less in needlessly brutal fashions (many of which ended with Katnip being outright dead).

Seems to be a trait of chase cartoons in general, really.

Sid in Toy Story is framed as the "villain" but in real life he'd just be a creative kid building new toys out of cannibalized old ones.

Also media like Breaking Bad, you could technically be rooting for the "villain" no matter who it was depending on your perspective. Hank is framed as an antagonist even though he's a lawman doing the right thing. And Walt is engaging in objectively villainous behavior throughout the show, but he's written as the protagonist so the audience is meant to sympathize with him and root for his success.

I feel like from fairly early on in Breaking Bad, I was only rooting for Walt to be successful when he was helping Jesse.

The problem is, how much was he helping Jesse and how much of it was self preservation? That's not a leading question because I still believe this was ambiguous throughout the show. Maybe even a little of both.

I'd argue that he's never really caring for Jesse, he's just using Jesse. Keeping Jesse happy is just part of keeping Jesse productive and loyal.

It's not really until the end that he makes a selfless choice to help Jesse for reasons other than self-interest.

I really feel like it's always been a mixture of both. We all have this with people we say we "care" about. How much do we actually care for selfless reasons and how much history and baggage and self interest is involved in this feeling that we have? How much are we willing to sacrifice for someone else's interest over our own?

I mean, it depends on who you're talking about - friends, family, acquaintances, etc. I'm obviously more likely to prioritize my own self-interest and safety over that of people I only know casually, but conversely if my best friend called me at 3am and told me he needed help hiding a body I'd be in my truck with a shovel in the back in about 5 minutes.

But I'm pretty sure I've never pressured any friends or family into running a meth ring with me. So there's that.

I feel like the better question is have you ever sided with the antagonist. With Walt, his character is very villainous but he's also the protagonist so he's easier to support. And to the point of hank being the good guy doing the right thing... he's definitely heavily flawed and is hypocritical and egotistical quite often. Wouldn't say he's necessarily painted as a great guy throughout the show either

Egotistical, absolutely, at least in the beginning. Hypocritical? Maybe? I don't particularly remember anything specific but I think I remember him abusing his position for "perks", but nothing too serious. Mostly he was just really arrogant and kind of annoying from a certain perspective but nothing really lawbreaking or egregious. Then his personality changed drastically from PTSD at a point, but even then it wasn't really anything "morally wrong". It was just a bout of severe depression followed by an overwhelming focus on putting an end to a criminal.

Really, there weren't any "good" characters on the show. Everyone had their flaws, some more than others. But from a legal and moral perspective, I feel Hank was one of the least spotty ones.

Yeah the Occuria needed to go and Arcadia was working the hardest to make it happen but the conquest part of it was just greed and power lust. The premise for them to have better motives and goals than the main party was there but gotta make em extremists or the party doesnt look so great.
