With GTA VI on the way it looks like the world is going to be insanely detailed with all the different signs, notices, drink labels, models for npcs etc.

Curious to know who it's taking the crown from.

RDR2 has a lot of attention to detail I haven't seen in many other games, if any. KCD has IMO a very realistic world, but less attention to smaller details. I haven't played KCD2.

Yeah, probably RDR2.

as far as open-worlds go, I agree with Red Dead Redemption 2.

for more linear games - The Last of Us Part II.

For the time, the can you can kick around in Mega Man Legends might just have been the most detailed piece of a game world ever.

Yes it did.

I think the Kingdom Come games deserve a mention as well.

And if you really look around, From games contain so many little details, especially Elden Ring.

I do not nominate this game, but I'm thinking Oblivion Remastered might have the most detailed trees I've seen in a game of that type.

Death Stranding tbh as far as realistic environment goes. Cyberpunk for the more human aspect.

Those megaman battle network games let you interact with damn near everything in the world. Random chair? Lan will have some comment to make about it.

I thought that was really cool as a kid.

As others are saying probably Red Dead Redemption II

Though from around that same time I was also really impressed with the environments in Forza Horizon 3 and Monster Hunter: World

depends on the type of detail

out of the games ive played, ff7 rebirth has the most, like, handywork/stuff to look at. like you can walk into damn near any street in any city, any room of any building and see the attention to detail etc, its a marvel to just walk around and look at things IMO

In terms of NPCs, i haven't seen a game which beats the trails series where damn near every NPC basically has their own personal character arc/story that progresses on their own as you progress the main story, and even random side NPCs can foreshadow side quests or even the main story later. there will be stuff like ingame newspapers which you can read up about ongoing world events (which often play into sidequests or foreshadow future main story etc, or simply just how the world is reacting to the goings on induced by your party and what theyre doing etc)

i haven't played read dead redemption but i assume it does detail in a different way to FF7 Rebirth and Trails

It pales compared to more modern games, but I still contend that True Crime: Streets of LA wasn't just great for its map, but because of the "slice of life" of its NPC extras. It had a "life" to it that was noticeable whereas other action games kind of included it as an afterthought.

ive got about 80-90 hours. its very lifeless and gamey

i would say RDR2 off the top of my head, but im gonna think about it for a bit. the fact that NPCs have huge routines and routes that they keep to whether ur there or not is actually insane

skyrim is also a crazy answer but i guess it depends on what one interprets as "detail"
