You know, with this being almost assuredly the reason for the trade, it just reillustrates how fucking stupid they were for trading Mookie. Betts is not only one of the most likeable players in the sport, but the dude will play any position you want him to.

he was never going to pitch more than an inning or two tonight. the option is between making him go to the minors for rehab appearances or just let him build back up in the majors and since they need his bat it's a pretty easy choice

Last night, Orion Kerkering picked up his first career save, but when he came in, the broadcast showed his stats in a way that's bothered me when I saw it in the past.

The save opportunity stat is merely saves + blown saves, which ignores holds. As shown, he has 4 blown saves this year and 6 in his career.

Last year, one of his blown saves was actually that. The Phillies scored a run in the top of the 10th, he entered in the bottom and gave up the tying run, then ended up with the win when the Phillies scored in the 11th and another pitcher finished. In the other, he allowed the tying runs in the 6th inning. He entered in a save situation, because if he had held the lead and finished the game, he would been credited with a save, but in actuality that wasn't going to happen.

Of his 4 blown saves this year, 2 came in the 7th inning, 1 in the 8th and 1 in the 9th. Since it's highly doubtful he would have finished the first 3, only the 9th inning game was really a blown save.

In his career, he's entered games in 32 save situations. He has 1 save, 6 blown saves and 25 holds. So slightly better than 80% of the time he enters in a save situation, he leaves without giving up the lead. Seems to be a decent overall conversion rate.

The Phillies broadcasters didn't focus on it, but it reminded me of when Ryan Madson was making the transition from high leverage reliever to closer and national broadcasters would question if he was capable of it because of his poor career save percentage. At the time, it was poor because he didn't have many saves, lacking opportunities to finish games, and had blown saves when he was a younger pitcher getting a foothold in the majors. He did give up an occasional lead in games he wasn't going to finish, but taking holds into consideration, he was very effective as a reliever.

Anyone else notice this when a home grown reliever works his way up from middle relief to high leverage, but there are questions about whether he has "closer stuff" because the stats they use ignore important context?

Yeah, I suppose that stat would be misleading. After all, it's not just closers who can earn blown saves.

I'm not really a stat nerd, but I've never noticed blown saves being counted like that before. To me, those are blown holds. I'm baffled. The three inning save should not be a factor here.

It does seem like the blown save stat just assumes a pitcher entering into a save situation will complete the game.

I had thought saves + blown saves + holds would equal save situations, but that game also shows that isn't the case. Baseball Reference says you need to retire a batter to get a hold, so Romano didn't get one despite not giving up the lead while he was on the mound. His stats for the season are 17 save situations, with 8 saves, 2 blown and 6 holds. That's only 16, so that game would be the 17th save situation.

Curious that it says retiring a batter for a hold rather than recording an out. That could mean a reliever could enter a save situation with 2 outs and at least one base runner, get a caught stealing to finish the inning and get replaced. With that wording, a hold wouldn't be credited.

I'm also not quite sure about some things with Baseball Reference's definition of a save situation.

SVSit -- Save Situations
Pitcher entered the game after the fifth inning in a save situation.
Or pitcher entered earlier in the game and did not get the win.
When the starter did not go five innings, it is
possible to enter in a save situation and get the win.
Save Situation Defn. (any of three):
1. team has a lead of no more
than three runs and and at least three outs remaining.
2. The tying run is either on base, at bat or on deck.
3. At three innings remain in the game.
For our purposes, a save situation is only one
of the first two.

I'm guessing #3 should be "At least three inning remain in the game".

But I'm not sure what they mean by that final sentence of "a save situation is only one of the first two".

You can't do that anymore with the roster rules. You can only carry 13 arms, which is what they have now. So it will have to be a pitcher for a pitcher, and that's probably going to be Cabrera.

Yeah, Skubal vs Skenes is an unbelievable missed opportunity. Although they play each other every season, it's interminable when/if the stars will align for them to pitch on the same day against each others' teams, so it would have been pretty special to see it today.
