6. Virtual Cat (Virtual Cat)
UF8

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/8/8e8b8a95.png

Speaking of controversial placements

Virtual Cat is a basic design. It is essentially a doodle of a cat. It doesnt even have legs. Why in the world have I ranked it above 145 other nominations?

There are actually quite a few reasons. One is that its a basic design that easily evokes the playfulness and mystery of a cat. That sideways face says its up to no good, and you better watch out, and that is communicated so crystal clearly to me. Just from that one stare. Its fun and playful, like many cats another reason it ranks so high, because its conveying its intent through the design.

Another benefit of Virtual Cat is its a very flexible design. Put it on something, and it will instantly evoke the emotions you would associate with the base design. Its a master class in minimalist art; with just a few strokes, see what Virtual Cat does.

Another big reason to love the Cat is that it perfectly reflects the tone of its YouTube channel. Check this out:

https://www.youtube.com/@%E3%83%90%E3%83%BC%E3%83%81%E3%83%A3%E3%83%AB%E3%81%AD%E3%81%93/videos

There are tons of these but most of them are barely thirty seconds long. A random sampling, to give you a sense of the tone (again, theyre super short):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usB5zZCioi8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAGRzJbK5rg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6jTWAukxMM

Virtual Cat is also a vtuber, which Im only mentioning for completenesss sake; I focused on the absurdist cartoons. Those cartoons match Virtual Cats design perfectly.

Would anybody else have ranked Virtual Cat this high? Probably not. But I see a lot of value, and a lot of joy, in a design like this. Its proof that character designs dont have to be elaborate or complicated. You can convey so much with but a few strokes of a pen. Theres room enough in the pantheon of good character design for Virtual Cat, and Im very grateful for that.

i want to throw in an additional core piece of virtual cat lore btw

virtual cat is a vtuber in the more traditional sense that he's just somebody who uses a digital avatar (aka. his illustration) representing a fictional entity to represent them in a conventional, primarily youtube-based medium, rather than a streamer with an avatar (though he does also happen to stream on occasion nowadays, they're rare, and he was acknowledged as one long before he ever did any). the latter generalisation only really took hold because of those types of content creators becoming more popular... so yeah, those videos are by no means separate to his "vtuber" activites, they are them. it's worth mentioning that his gateway into the scene was a channel that also only ever had really abstract videos (like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LK6lrdvw5Ws), and the reason he even is a cat is mostly just because his prior internet persona was loosely cat-themed too, albeit only really through the name of his doujin circle.

also that wasn't actually the thing i was going to mention, it's that virtual cat secretly could probably solo the rest of the nominees lol (totally canon)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lA6PKZasL8A

anyway i was just happening to go through my dms with rwlh earlier on, honestly anticipating this exact placement now, and i did notice something i put down late last year for my two noms i feel like sharing

but yeah i'm pretty satisfied with these two noms even if i don't think either is a winning candidate or particularly close to one tbh

mostly because the way they're actually applied give them qualities that set them apart pretty well from a lot of other submissions. virtual cat in having a really malleable form that follows the absurd idea that anything can be a virtual cat, and with his design it's still really easy to identify just about any other form as him. like ditto but with more character lol. also like i basically said already, it's just a deceptively effective design too. the design is just a constant to whatever surroundings are around him. like i mentioned, he's just going to be the same 2d image even when that doesn't fit the setting at all, like in a vrchat world lol. which is kind of a weird point to make after talking about how he's still identifiable even with a different form, but, you know. that face can do a lot of heavy lifting because there just isn't a lot it can be mistaken for, and that's a strength.

and then there's this thing (referring to humanoid dj) which... well, obviously i didn't expect to find it, but it came to mind very quickly and i was immediately coming up with plenty of reasons to not pick it. especially for a ranking topic, it's almost inevitable to come up with the criticism that it's overdesigned, just picked because it's really, really, really high definition rather than oh my god this is the best design ever, it's weird, there's definitely better out there, and it's definitely not the only robot eye thing in pop culture out there. And all of those are true. for this ranking too, its design serves as a jarring clash with its role as a dj, and especially at being humanoid at fucking all lmfao. so objectively it's a bad pick lol. BUT that also kind of the point of it, and that's why i wanted to pick it. it's the atypical role it serves that gives it meaning. so i guess in a way it's a good stress test for your ranking.
in many respects, it's funny how i took note of the ironic application of "humanoid dj" but not virtual cat. virtual cat's essence being able to just ground just about any other concept with his face on it to recognisably "being him" first and whatever else they are second in his videos is lowkey impressive, sure, but what i'm surprised i glossed over then was also just how despite this, it simultaneously showcases this surrealism of his form being used to do his "typical" """cat activities""". i think the credit has to in part go more to the videos themselves than him but they definitely show how virtual cat's design can handle being used for just about anything, despite itself. it's bad, but it's also brilliant.

regardless though, i'm obviously very pleased with the results. even without the placements being what they are, i made it apparent back then that my real goal was simply to encourage some more creative thinking for the ranking beyond just "is this a good character/design for what it's made for" and it's very obvious to me that the ranking more than delivered in that respect even just on my own results

also i have to admit i never expected to see him actually place above scourge, especially with sonic around the top 10. i'm absolutely saving that one image like a trophy now lmao

Its

Pancham (Pokmon)
rwlh

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/1/1cdf0022.jpg

The goat. And by the mean the panda.

Yep, there were four designs I liked more than Pancham. Which is good, because if it placed in the top three, I wouldnt have been able to include it at all!

So Pancham is obviously cute, and I have a weakness for cute designs (though notably, none of the top four are cute like Pancham is). But thats not the reason I love Pancham, or the reason I own a plushie of it despite never playing a Pokmon game. I love Pancham because it oozes personality. The stance. The smirk. The hands on the hips. Its all there.

My favorite detail about Pancham is about the leaf in its mouth. I guess its canon to all Pancham, but the leaf serves no actual purpose its only there because Pancham thinks its cool. Humorously, when Pancham are disciplined by older Pangoro, the Pangoro will sometimes take away their leaf.

Beyond that, its a streamlined bear design. Huge head, brown-gray-white fur, little paws, tiny white tail, and a very stylish mohawk-like crown of three spikes of fur. I have to imagine the resemblance to stereotypical delinquent hair was intentional on Game Freaks part.

Seriously though I love Pancham. Im not a big animal person in real life but I would absolutely be friends with a Pancham and go on adventures with it. Love it to bits.

but its not winning the ranking.

So who is?

As someone who thinks that Pokemon designs have been largely consistent across the board, Pancham is pretty neat. 4. Miss Heed (Villainous)
Pirateking2000

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/d/d03ec328.jpg

If there was one character who surprised me the most in the whole ranking, its this one, right here.

Miss Heed belongs to the Jessica Rabbit school of character design as an overt sex symbol who bakes that identity into her characterization. Unlike Jessica, Miss Heed is from a childrens cartoon (though from clips I saw, Villainous is probably more teen-oriented?). Her whole shpiel feels like a wink and a nod to cartoons of old. She is largely legs in a way that seems more common on anime characters than in Western animation.

Shes a superhero (in name only). Her costume is all pink and white: a heart chestpiece and headpiece, a skirt so short its practically underwear, white thigh-high stockings, and translucent pink bracelets. She even has a heart-shaped eye mask. Her color composition is stellar. She looks like a Valentines Day commercial mixed with an ad youd see for one of those role-playing games with busty ladies: TAME YOUR PLEASURE. YOU CAN REALLY BLOW YOUR WAD IN THIS GAME.

She really leans into the heart/pink/girly girl theming, which is intentional: shes actually an evil influencer, designed to be trendy and sexy, and she derives satisfaction from being followed. So shes super flirtatious and craves attention. She even uses mind control to make people love her. This all justifies her outfit, her sex appeal, everything is so neatly packaged together.

I think Miss Heed might be the character in the ranking who aligns the closest with visual design and character. I was so impressed with her. I was going to post a clip for everyone to watch her action, but it looks like it was taken down maybe the nominator could find something?

Top five not bad!

Yeah Heed is 300% about being an attention nut and e-thot by design lol. Though its a bit tragic as there is a lot of background with her that goes into that. She was an attention nerd at the villain school during the teens which alone was rough. Then when she jumped ship to get the attention of the setting's superman (because he's in essence the most popular guy in the world) betraying her best friend in the process by stealing his mind control formula, she almost dies when the settings version of SHIELD / Justice League experiments on her to give her a power boost or potential alteration to her existing power (that amusingly being evaporating liquids). This process also amplified her attention obsession even more and she may have been haunted by the show's titular lovecraftian horror. Then she loses it when her plan crashes down around her. It's got a lot of crazy lore

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qLXitiwVxA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tvx3DGGcxs

She even has her own instagram and tiktok that follows along with the setting's ongoing timeline and has other animations and such.

Villainous has a lot of great character designs and I'd recommend checking it out. Unfortunately it is/was being strung along by Warner (as a lot are right now) though funny enough during the course of this project they released a teaser trailer for another series based in the setting and seem to be going the indie route so that's cool (it follows up on a lore comic they made which itself follows up on the events of the Heed episode. Its a fun read.)

Anyway mediocre job Miss Heed. Alas you failed and must be punished

3. Cryptic (The Stormlight Archive)
NFUN

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/c/c6f95802.jpg

Now heres a fascinating nom. This was the only nomination from a non-visual medium (that I can think of offhand): The Stormlight Archive is a book series. This artwork comes from official supplemental material, so it was valid for the ranking.

Cryptics are a race of spren (creatures of nature) with heads made up of infinitely generating spirals, each one distinct from the others. The field guide/journal entry mentions that its impossible to capture their complexity in a drawing, but Im imagining a cooler/more fantastical version of those inflatable mascots people display outside car dealerships.

Either way Cryptics are suuuuper weird. The wiki says: They can get to be a bit much, and because they'll start talking in numbers and in mathematical formulas, they often seem like they're planning something, when in reality they're just not quite getting what's going on in the same way. This is reflected really nicely in their design; the Cryptics are, true to their name, unknowable. Also, the race is obsessed with seeking the truth, another element of unknowability reflected in the design. Theyre alien, but theyre beautiful.

If youre curious, the rest of their bodies are like a robe, with long, bony hands (though possibly without bones).

Really fun nomination, very unique and not just because of the source. I love things that exist at the intersection of known and unknown, and Cryptic was the best depiction of that.
