Allow me to be the lone voice that says NO.

It feels like it was made to be everything Star Wars isn't. We have a main villain who gets to spend all their time dumping their philosphy on you and you are not allowed to counter argue.

Dark and miserable world where I have to wonder what the point of saving a galaxy so far gone is. Everyone is miserable and everything is dying.

It also does that dumb thing of building up a boss for the entire game only to curbstomp him in gameplay and have your characters act like hes unstopable in the next scene. Darth Nihilus you suck.

Talking Darth Sion to death was legit cool however.

Pretty miserable experiacne all around.

I think KOTOR 1 is a top 5 game all time.

I think KOTOR 2 is a dumpster fire and Obsidian fans are all under a mass hallucination that their games are great and not consistently borderline-unplayable buggy messes.

Yes I understand the time crunch they had, no it doesn't excuse it, and no the content restoration patch doesn't make it great. It added and changed a bunch of stuff that only detracted from the pure experience from KOTOR 1, and the story was absolute cheeks.

Hot take: The majority of the stuff the restored content mod added back in was better off left on the cutting room floor. Nar Shaddaa especially did not need even more content. (The Gand sidequest was nifty, though).

The droid planet was particularly bad.

Love this game to death. A shame its potential was cut off by Lucas Arts rushing them, but it still managed to tell a great story. No other story really delved into the philosophy of the Force like this game did.

The Last Jedi's deconstruction efforts of the Jedi Order are a joke compared to what this game does to them.

I'm in a minority that thinks this is better than the first. Even with bugs and cut content.

Being able to have such a massive sway over your companions that you can corrupt them to the darkside and even turn them jedi/sith. Such a cool thing.

I wish more rpgs would have a system like that, instead of characters being stuck in their ways and there's no swaying them from it, and then have to plan all your actions around it. That shits not fun.

I remember slowly corrupting Bao Dur from the little goodies two shoes, to a ruthless sith who cheered along when I did bad things.

Yes

It's not as cool or essential as KOTOR 1, but it was still a fun experience and did some interesting stuff with the story/universe fo Star Wars that I don't think has been done as well anywhere else. Where KOTOR I think is an easy recommend to almost anyone, KOTOR2 is more the game I think people will enjoy if they are interested in Star Wars.

The gameplay's definitely better, just because you can actually character build worth a damn. Options were so barren in KOTOR 1.

Absolutely. If you ignore the technical issues, it's a fantastic exploration and deconstruction of morality in the SW universe. I think it also built on top of the first game pretty well. The franchise in general could learn a lot from the shades of grey here.

Now if I stop ignoring those technical issues then yeah it's a buggy incomplete mess that is far less than the sum of its parts. However, you don't need to play that version of the game in the modern era.

I think KotOR II, story-wise, goes in an interesting direction and gives a far different perspective than what a lot of Star Wars media had up to that point. You get to see the consequences of the preceding wars on both the macro (the devastation and potential recovery of Telos) and the micro (the individual stories of the characters you meet) level. It's fascinating to see how a galaxy-wide conflict between the Jedi/Republic is Sith are viewed on that individual level, and I think it pretty-accurately depicts how the average Joe would neither know nor comprehend exactly the dogmatic *why* behind the conflict. There's also a very touching story beneath it all about confronting the scars of the past, and how it is not too late for one to make better decisions when facing those scars anew.

That said, I think a lot of Star Wars media *since* KotOR II has tried to emulate it at the broadest strokes, and not nearly as effectively. I've never been a fan of the deification of Revan and the concept of the 'grey Jedi' that has emerged from this game. I think it tends to be handled too ham-fistedly in many cases.

My thoughts.

-While I do like both KOTOR games, both are buggy and filled with glitches. I STRONGLY suggest against adding too many mods as it is easy to make the game unplayable/unfinishable if you do. Even without mods save often as you will find yourself having to reload saves anyway to deal with bugs.
-Sad to this day we never got a proper follow-up. The Revan novel did the Jedi Exile/Meetra Surik dirty.
-I enjoyed how the game was subversive about many elements of the Star Wars universe. It brought up themes and ideas no other work in the franchise implemented as well. Also enjoyed Kreia as a character, obviously nefarious as she is.
-The Influence System is horrendous, particularly with all the hidden rules about who can take influence away from who. You'll have the best time with the game using the mod tool to max it and forget about it.
-Kinda wish the boss fight against Darth Nihilus was harder, but he met his Hard Counter in a void like the Jedi Exile/Meetra Surik. Otherwise, there would be no way to stop probably a top 3 strongest Sixth to ever live that can kill a whole planet by just being there.
-Having played the game with and without the restoration patch, I will say while it does improve the game, it doesn't massively change things. Main things are the HK Factory and giving the Final Dungeon (Malachor) a proper story experience with non-Mira human party members getting to do something. Stuff like gathering the Mandalorians together never got added into the game... Basically, even with the patch, the game still has an unfinished feeling.
-Despite being unfinished, I feel I had more fun with this game than KOTOR 1. Maybe it is the customization and interesting story direction.

Basically this.

-I view this as a strength. It is the natural result of 3 horrible wars (Exar Kun, Mandolarians, Darth Revan/Malak) in the span of about 50 years which basically destroyed both the Jedi Order and the Republic...and then Darth Nihilus leaves only a handful of Jedi left in a galaxy that doesn't like force users and struggles to tell the difference between Jedi and Sith. Thankfully you can spread hope on a light side ending and Meetra Surik's Jedi apprentices go onto rebuild the Jedi Order.

But yeah, I do like the game a lot despite being buggy as hell and unfinished. Here is an amazing picture by the way.

The term isn't defined well. It originally was meant to refer to characters like Qui-Gon Jinn who followed their own path separate from what the Jedi Council decreed... It got expanded to characters exiles like Ahsoka (and of course thr Jedi Exile of KOTOR 2) people who could use both sides of the force besides as just a gameplay mechanic (Revan comes to mind). It is difficult to talk about due to everyone's own interpretation of the term and how it has changed. Never mind terms like "Dark Jedi" can refer to characters that were never Jedi in the first place.

I like the look that picture went with. I'm also a fan of the Keanu Reeves-inspired look as well. Granted, considering the character is most known for his (or non-canonically her) look with a mask, that also has to be taken into consideration.

Yeah, HK-47 was great.

Odd how the suits didn't learn the lesson with trying to rush out a sequel. The same thing happened in regards to the Force Unleashed 2 a little over half a decade later. Unlike KOTOR 2 though, it wouldn't be remembered as fondly.
