Everytime someone makes something spicy and says watch out, it's really spicy it's never more than kinda spicy. And every restaurants hottest sauce is never more than mildly spicy. If I'm not turning red and sweating it's not too spicy.

^My recommendation as someone who don't mind spicy at all. Reaper was so spicy that it just got annoying chewing on it. Im glad I had a second, milder sandwich

Illinois, I have so many great, authentic cuisines around here from places known for their spiciness that are pretty hot but I haven't felt overwhelmed by spicy food in years.

Yeah, most spicy stuff in mainstream places is extremely mild. I can get some good spice levels if I make it myself. Probably not going to get anything really spicy unless you find a Thai place in a larger, more diverse city.

The obvious solution is to make your own food and make it as spicy as you want.

That or just pepper spray your meals (disclaimer: do not actually do this).

Chicago is a pretty large and diverse city, and I've had homemade spicy cuisine from other cultures, not just restaurants

Most restaurants have to cap the hotness factor and many don't know true heat.

Personally, I've known several Mexican restaurants with a secret off-menu hot sauce that has actual heat.

There is a huge difference between extreme heat and tasty hotness. For some reason, modern culture has decided that super hot that overshadows flavor is the thing to do.

And there is the point at which catering to those incapable of handling spicy food gets outrageous. It reminds me of the time, I'm in Cabo at an all inclusive resort with my family of Mexican descent. We kept asking for an actually hot hot sauce and they couldn't deliver. It why I travel with my own.

Spicy does not equal hot.

Cajun food is very spicy by nature, but is palatable to most people.

Hot as measured by scoville units is a different story. Wanna burn yourself up in a world of hot peppers? There's an arena for that, but it isn't popular public restaurants.

I'm mostly talking about actual immigrants/first generation Americans making homemade versions of dishes at full spiciness.

You live in Illinois. They aren't catering to a demographic that grew up eating spicy foods, even if those restaurant owners did.

Buldak ain't even that bad. Sure, it's got some spice to it. I just hate how much powder it comes with. It fills my lungs and sends me into a coughing fit.

Peppers are being made weaker so they sell more. You have to get the known hot ones now for any spice. :l

It took me out for half a day.

I got a slider of each spice level. Everything up to the reaper was manageable. But the reaper specifically was awful. I could feel it in my insides leaving a trail of burning wherever it went. It was really scary when my chest was just burning from the inside. Moving also spread the burn, so I mostly just laid back in my chair for half a day.
