Its been almost 15 years!!! The public deserves honesty so we can move on.

My headcanon is the last two books are the same as the show, so it's actually better this way.

It probably wouldn't go away completely but if he today states that he is done with everything related to ASoIaF then I doubt people would even bother with him in 5 years. He could go on working on Wild Cards, which is clearly his passion, and the vast majority of people would forget about him.

Because if it's less than or equal to fifteen years he probably could have gotten a head start by shutting the fuck up sometime in the last decade+.

Or just the last six years.

As the proverb goes: "the best time to shut the fuck up was a hundred years ago, the second best time is today."

Everyone who has read the books usually has a favorite House. I like the Tyrells. That finale is close enough to the current books so its likely that will happen

There is a very old interview from somewhere around season 2 of the show where D&D flat out said the notes Martin gave them included the ending. For obvious reasons all parties have pretty much stopped talking about that interview, but in my mind it's way more than a pet theory and as close to confirmed truth that we're ever going to get.

I honestly don't think the end of itself was bad. It's just that everything was so obviously rushed that it led a bad taste in everyone's mouth. What happened was always ment to happen just it was supposed to be longer. Unfortunately the hacks got tired of it and didn't want tohers taking over so they rushed it to do....nothing lmao ruined their reputation for nothing and gave GRR Martin apathy to finishing the books. Fuck them for not just ruining the ending to the greatest show ever, but upsetting the writer of the books.

Ya the ending wasnt even bad, its just that in tv show format it was way too rushed. So what would have been a good ending in literary form ended up being a bunch of characters hastily moved around just to arrive at an unearned plot point.

I read and enjoyed the first two books and then stopped there because I realized it was never going to be finished (I believe this was during the early seasons of the show) and didn't want to get that invested in a book series destined to have no ending.

I found A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to be a much more enjoyable GoT reading experience because the writing is every bit as good and it kinda stands on its own with no years-long case of blue balls hanging over it.

You know George, no one is forcing you at gun point to read your hate mail and respond every few months. You can go live your life care-free, and not give a fuck what the fans think. I'm sure if every content creators had to listen too what all their fans think of their work, that the vast majority of them would enter straight into depression.

People need to move on. That would teach him a lesson when it doesn't sell if/when he gets around to finishing it.

It won't live up to any hype, and I wouldn't be surprised if the franchise is tainted from how the show slowly went downhill.

14 years later, I give zero shits if he ever actually releases another book in the series.

I dont care about Westeros anymore and I dont believe that George cares about it either.

I wish I could say that if you ignore him, he might actually finish the book but I doubt that.

Imagine being almost 80 years old, taking nearly 15+ years to write a book that is nowhere in sight, then getting mad at people for stating the obvious about you. George is perfectly welcome to give an in depth explanation of whats currently happening with Winds, but he chooses not to. But continue yelling at the fans I guess

There isn't an economic incentive for him to do it.

I think the last book dropped during season 2 of the show(?) or around there. Since then the franchise has exploded in popularity and the TV show had an overwhelmingly disappointing ending that was probably wasn't that different from GRRM's plans, they've started a spin off TV show that's still popular, and 2-5 additional spin offs still teased and somewhat expected to release. That's a huge amount of pressure for someone who was already known for constantly missing deadlines.

GRRM has also said he likes to write the characters without a lot of plot thought - "tending a garden" or whatever it was and letting the characters do whatever they'd be doing naturally. But it's also super unnatural to push everyone into the centre role for a big climax. So all that's really left for him to do is the exact thing he doesn't like to write, with a ton of pressure that he has to reach what are, at this point, completely unobtainable standards.

I'd frankly be surprised if he ever put out Winds of Winter, even if he does actually really want to. I kind of get it - I'd hate to be in this situation.

Also, nobody is forcing him to take on a million side projects that keep him too busy to work on his novel. That is 100% him choosing to do that because he wants to.

I always hate that gardener thing. Its not like gardeners throw random seeds into a patch of dirt, water occasionally, and hope for the best. They still have to plan shit, have to trim dying plants/plants that arent thriving, pest control, etc.

Game of Thrones always felt more thought out than his other novels, he had a clear idea of where everyone needed to go. I think he moved into this gardener shtick because that was a lot of effort first time around.

Sure you'd have a bunch of idiots angry but overall I think the backlash would be way lower and even the idiots who get super angry about stuff like this would at least be able to move on instead of dwell on Winds.

I mean, people are allowed to be upset that the series won't finish. But yes, it would be better just to admit it's not going to happen.

I think he has to admit to himself first that he isnt going to finish it.

Not much before if I remember right.
Why does it seem like yesterday but its been 15 years. I remember being all excited.

I think the fifth book was finished shortly before Season 1 started, and then came out shortly after season 1 was done. So he basically hasnt released a single book during the entire duration of the show and the years since its been over

I remember I was reading the then last book in the franchise, Feast for Crows when the show was announced.

It's been 5,072 days since A Dance with Dragons was released. A Dance with Dragons is 1,056 pages long. That's an average of 4.8 pages per day. Assuming The Winds of Winter is of a comparable page count, just 10 pages a day - no Herculean feat - sees it released seven years ago.

Yeah, King writes because it's his job as a writer.

Martin writes because it's a hobby.

I've given up on Winds ever happening, mostly because Martin is keeping himself busy doing anything but write it.

I've said before there isn't an economic incentive for him to write Winds, while there is to do consulting work on HoD, producing D&E, and the myriad other works he finds more lucrative than the book series that made him rich.

Because it's his job.

The reason he can spit out one or two books per year is because every book takes him a few years to write, but he always has multiple books going at the same time
