I got a sudden toothache on Friday afternoon and have been taking ibuprofen for it. Yesterday was really bad and I took tylenol and Orajel in addition to the ibuprofen and was miserable for the whole day. I've only been getting about 2 hours of sleep every few hours because I end up waking up from the pain. Now I've been awake since 10pm last night and it's 2:15am and my jaw has been swollen and numb. Probably can't go to the dentist until Monday at the earliest.

I miss my previous dentist. They were open 7 days a week from 9am til 9pm, but they ended up closing in 2020 due to Covid. Now any places I can go aren't open on weekends and only until about 4-5pm.

I'm going to need a root canal, and I was prescribed antibiotics for the swelling. I'm currently doing alright with the pain but am still heavily relying on ibuprofen, which I am aware of can be harmful if done for too long, but the pain becomes so bad that it prevents me from eating or sleeping. The root canal will be on June 16th.

I'm sorry. I wouldn't wish an toothache on my worst enemy.

Roots canals sound worse than they really are. Paying for the cap sucks since it's usually not covered by insurance. You'll feel pressure but no pain. Woke up one day and half my face was bloated lol. People at work were like "you need to see a doctor!" I finished my shift anyway.

I'm extremely lucky I never had any tooth issues and I went 20 years without a dentist visit. I'm going to the dentist twice a year now for the past several years but before that, nothing.

I can't even imagine.

That's mainly because of the anesthetics they inject on your gums.

Nobody ever warns you about tooth pain but it is absolutely fucking awfully, unbearably painful.

Hopefully the painkillers do their job. Try not to worry about taking the Ibuprofen, you have a very valid reason to be taking it and it wouldn't have been prescribed it if it wasn't appropriate.

Yeah, I've had a root canal before, though I forget how long ago, and it's on a tooth I already have a crown on. I don't remember them being so damn expensive, though. Getting it done by a specialist is like $2000+ out of pocket with insurance. With everything else I need to have done in my mouth, the bill was nearly $3000. Thankfully the person setting up my appointment directed me to another place they're associated with that can do the root canal for about $500.

Thats horrible, but it wont be bad (if youve never had this done). For the record, Im petrified of dental procedures, but this was pretty much like having a cavity filled or something. No pain during or after the procedure. It was really expensive, but my insurance didnt cover it, so hopefully yours is better. Youre going to sit in a chair for a long time, but they probably wont be actually in your mouth for more than 10-20 minutes, so your jaw probably wont even be sore.

The dental assistant told me that the discomfort that you feel after the procedure is similar to what you feel before it. So if you say the pain is manageable right now then it will probably be fine in recovery. I might have taken one or two Tylenol, but thats it.
