I played the HD Trilogy version on Steam. The new sprites look awesome and way better than the crunchy DS sprites I remember when I played the first 4 games in 2008 lol, but the lack of extra content and chapter select really sucks. I'm pretty sure the DS versions had those, but oh well.

I still remembered the killers of all the cases, but forgot a lot of details and even some victims lol. But I still had a lot of fun replaying everything. Definitely would do it again in another 20 years >_> Wish I could play these games again for the 1st time...

If I had to rank them:
3 > 1 > 2
with Case 1-4 being my favorite (though all the final cases are phenomenal)

2 is still a great game. 2-4 is an amazing case and 2-2 is also great. 2-1 & 2-3 are kinda mid compared to the other cases but are still fun >_>
1 is the original. Never played nothing like it before and it set the bar. Every case is great with 1-4 being the best in the series imo. 1-5 is boring and way too long, but it wasn't part of the original game so whatever
3 is much better than I remember. The way all the cases are connected with it culminating with the final case is a fantastic way to end the series. The entire game was a blast from beginning to end.

Other than the Trilogy, I only played 4, 5, and Investigations 1, but the OG trilogy blows all those games out of the water (from what I remember of them at least)

Also, Maya best girl. Pearl is right!! Phoenix x Maya OTP! Fuck Iris!

....AMA? >_> What's your experience with Ace Attorney? Please tell me you've at least played the OG trilogy, right?

3 days is so long. I'm glad all the other games after 1 cut investigations and trials down to 2 days. Even back in 2008, I actually skipped this case cuz I got bored and read it wasn't even part of the original GBA version. I think I completed it after I beat the trilogy, but before I played 4

Yeah the original trilogy is great. 3-5 is by far my fav, with 2-4 close behind.

4 was interesting, but was jarring for obvious reasons, and the last case was just so weird, and made worse in retrospect as it never came up again. Im fine with Phoenix being how he is, but that whole Juror system thing sucked,

5 is full of lame cases. You already know who did it, and proving how they did is dumb because you are basically just forcing the game to push forward until you can finally select the option you know about. Also, Athena p. I cant put my finger on why, but I dont like her. Maybe because we already had Trucy as a good assistant. Maybe because she adds nothing. Maybe because shes got no ties to the main cast and doesnt seem to fit in. Anyway, the game is skippable.

6 is better. Not only does it bring back important characters, but it finally gives Apollo the development he needed. They also bring up the dumb plot holes left from 4. I think the ending is close, or on par, with 3-5. The setting is unique too.

I havent finished Great Attorney, but it kind of feels bloated and similar to 5, where you are just spinning your wheels waiting to see what convoluted way you need to trigger the correct sequence of events. It never feels natural or earned.

I'm extremely curious to see how 4 holds up for me now that I'm so far removed from it. I remember not liking the direction they took with the series and Phoenix (like everyone else did back then). But now that I'm older and more games have come out (instead of it being the most recent when I first played it), I want to see how my opinion changed.

I have a buddy that fucking swears by 4 and thinks it's the best one lol

I remember being excited when it came out, and kind of let down that nothing big really happened. The entire deal with why Phoenix got to where he was seemed cheap. Like most things 4 and 5, it feels like fnaficiton and convoluted just for the sake of being confusing.

I really need to play 6. I'm replaying the games so I can eventually tackle it. I agree with you on 5 a bit. a lot of the cases are kinda lame and not memorable. Athena is whatever. Blackquill was fun tho.

I heard Great ace attorney was supposed to be good since it was written by the same guy who wrote 1 to 4. Maybe it gets better?

I finished the first case, and did part of 2. Herlock Sholmes is a funny character. I dont like the new assistant much.

But it brings up really interesting points, and Im surprised at how critical it is of Japans legal system. It also brings up how the west kind of pushed Japan into a future not of their choosing.

Also case 1 is some Tom and Jerry levels of ridiculousness. The entire way the murder goes down is laughable and almost feels like your character is a liar when solving it, since it is so insane.

4 was way better the second time i played it. The first time, i remember being upset with the direction they took phoenix - the second time, i knew it was coming already and i think i was able to appreciate the game more for what it was.

That's correct. I'll also say to the other poster who said it felt bloated, keep playing - the first GAA game by itself is pretty solid, but the pair of games together really, really brings it home. It might be on par with the original trilogy for me when all is said and done, so many lovable characters

The case spins its wheels so much, I was constantly getting lost in investigations on what to do next. The obvious tech demos for 4's forensic system felt like fluff, and watching Meekins get his ass beat like 4 fucking times in that minute long video got old fast >_>

The case's story was good, but man it really needed a lot of editting and fluff cut out from it. Plus I recall it caused a plothole in regard to Edgeworth in AA2

Maybe you should do some research next time.

Maya is 17 in only the 1st game:
Ace Attorney 1

Maya is 18 or older in the next 8 mainline games:
Ace Attorney 2
Ace Attorney 3
Ace Attorney Investigations 1
Ace Attorney Investigations 2
Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney
Ace Attorney 4
Ace Attorney 5
Ace Attorney 6

And obviously it should go without saying that they should get together after Ace Attorney 2 smh

4-1 is great.

4-2 is alright, I enjoyed it (other than beating the dead horse on the magic panties joke.)

4-3 is pretty bad for many reasons, not the least of which is the gameplay and having to listen to that song recording over and over.

4-4 is interesting. Im not sure how I feel about it. Felt very contrived and surreal, like someone else said, it felt very fanfic-y.

AJ is hard to place since I like it about the same as 5 and more than 6, but those arent exactly high bars to clear.

My hot take, 5 is average, 6 is pretty bad, I1 and especially I2 are way better than I remember them being and theyre my new favorites outside the original trilogy, and GAA I havent finished yet (Im finding GAA1 to be a massive chore outside of some fun characters like Van Zeiks and the casual historic racism is awkward, but allegedly GAA2 is supposed to be totally amazing and worth the wait dude, so I guess Ill have to get there for myself).

I always see people say that AA (or VNs in general) isn't very replayable because you know the killers, but people forget just how many details you kind of get fuzzy on over time. The games are also still just a really fun ride with some excellent characters and a lot of big dramatic twists that are entertaining to re-experience.

I've gone through the series tons of times and I always enjoy it.

Oh yeah, I had a blast. Even though I knew all the killers, there's so much little stuff I forgot like *3-5 spoilers* Iris and Dahlia were Morgan's daughters and were sisters to Pearl

Completely got mind-wiped on that detail until I replayed the game lol As well as other bits. I think if you play these games every 10 years or so, you'll still enjoy them after forgetting enough >_>

you didn't like ace attorney 2 & 3? Why?

Eh. Its hard to say, exactly, especially because its definitely been the longest since Ive played the original, which I did enjoy a lot.

I think it may mostly be three things:

1) I feel like Im reading these games more than playing them. Maybe I just had more patience for it back when I played the original. I also really liked Hotel Dusk, which I played around that time as well. But 2, 3, and now 4, it feels like Im just giving my clicking finger exercise by constantly advancing text.

2) I really dont care for the game mechanics that much. In the original, its pretty basic stuff, with the fifth case (which is my overall favorite, in what seems like it may be an unpopular opinion) then making some good use of the DSs capabilities as well. Thats all fine. But then, the psychic lock stuff in subsequent games, and this whole perception bracelet thing in Apollo Justice, it just feels to me like they put their effort into developing unnecessary new game mechanics when they ought to have put their effort into better storytelling. Which leads to the third

3) The plots just havent interested me like they did in the original. I know that 3 is usually cited as the best in the series, but I was kind of rolling my eyes at stuff like Godots identity and what have you.

Like I said, I think the series maybe just isnt for me. Because I feel like the people who do really love the games would probably mostly disagree about all of that.

Man, I fuckin' love classic Ace Attorney. I completely lost interest in the series with Apollo Justice (plus I refuse to reward companies who enforce shitty business practices, so I got out of the series there - from what I've read in reviews, I jumped ship at the right time), but I still absolutely adore the original trilogy and the Investigations games.

I think 2-4 is my favourite case just because of what an adrenaline rush it is from start to finish. *Sooooo* many incredible moments in that case. 3-5 gives it a solid run for its money, though.
