President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he planned to start "phasing out" the Federal Emergency Management Agency after the hurricane season and that states would receive less federal aid to respond to natural disasters.
Trump also said he planned to distribute disaster relief funds directly from the president's office.

"We're going to do it much differently," Trump said in a briefing at the White House in response to a question about when he planned to eliminate FEMA and what his message was to governors regarding states bearing more disaster-relief costs.

"We're going to give out less money," he said.
"We're going to give it out directly. It'll be from the president's office. We'll have somebody here, could be Homeland Security."
In an apparent reference to his plans to wind down the disaster-relief agency, Trump added: "I'd say after the hurricane season we'll start phasing it out."
The U.S. hurricane season officially began on June 1 and lasts through November. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast last month that this year's season would be above normal with as many as 10 hurricanes.

Trump's comments were among the most direct to date indicating his intention to significantly downsize if not outright eliminate FEMA, which has an annual budget of around $30 billion and employed more than 20,000 people, including reservists, prior to layoffs earlier this year.
Distributing funds directly from the White House would also mark a departure from current protocols, under which FEMA oversees the dissemination of financial aid to the states following the president's declaration of a disaster.

Also at the briefing, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said that FEMA "fundamentally needs to go away as it exists" and that governors were being encouraged to work together to respond to disasters.
"We're building communication and mutual aid agreements among states ... so that they can stand on their own two feet with the federal government coming in in catastrophic circumstances with funding," Noem said.

Remember when it was a big shot against Biden that FEMA ran out of money last year? imagine if Trump could face any consequences for just never giving it out again.

I imagine the MAGA crowd will declare victory when Trump offers nothing to help West Coast Forest Fires, and it will somehow be democrats' fault when its also not there the next time a hurricane ravages Florida.

Also, isn't this literally what already happens in a disaster? Why does this Administration always have to include an extra step of "be awful" into everything?

It'll be replaced by "MEFA", which will do exactly the same thing as FEMA, but now all the conservatives who have spent years calling for FEMA to die get to say they killed it and replaced it with "a good, old fashioned conservative" alternative. And 75 million of the dumbest people imaginable won't even think to question it.

Reminds me of a certain previous Republican president who didn't give out proper aid after a certain Hurricane. Didn't go well for him in the end.

as someone who lives in North Carolina, there are many frustrating things about the election but the fact Trump won here immediately after Helene hit is nothing short of absolutely fucking infuriating.

literally voted in the guy who ran on doing nothing to stop hurricanes from getting worse. what the actual shit is wrong with you. like that's the point where I don't care how little the mainstream media actually covered that, that's something you'd think people actually would fucking care about.

FEMA is very far from perfect, but these people will never offer anything better.

Until a natural disaster comes their way and nobody's there to help them out when they lose their house. They won't blame Trump, though, despite his bragging about getting rid of FEMA... they'll find some way to blame the democrats for it.

So, the headline says FEMA is being phased out after hurricane season. Only problem is, they have already effectively stopped giving out assistance. My biggest problem with the current administration is all the fucking lies. Just be honest about what you're doing, and when it started.

Less money for struggling Americans who have been impacted by natural disasters, more money for tax cuts for the richest people in the country. Trump truly is a champion of the working class.

Even Trump's most faithful ass-suckers aren't getting funds for their state. How many bribes will they have to pony up to get the relief?

He's not trying to. Trump hates FEMA because it has oversight that makes it hard to grift, though he still managed to help Kushner steal millions of dollars during COVID.

right? the whole waiting until the end of hurricane season seems like a tacit admission that FEMA works

So trump is going to phase out FEMA so he can control all those funds for himself. And probably never use most of it for disasters and instead use it to pay for his own vanity projects or things for his donors/buddieS

Just a friendly reminder that this is in service of tax cuts for the mega wealthy. All the suffering that will arise from this is to give money to people who already have more money than they are able to spend.

The hypocrisy behind claiming states should manage their own disaster while fabricating a conflict in a state just to federalize the National guard and undermine a state's right to self-govern is just too fucking much.
