Already did the tutorial and can do the fun missions again. I remembered Kaz was missing a limb, but forgot he literally gave and arm AND a leg to the cause. Ocelot also told me about carrots. It plays like a dream on Steam Deck, even with Denuvo lurking somewhere.

Afghanistan. A place where dreams are made, enemies are sleeper'd, and flowers are picked.

It just ain't a party unless someone is getting fulton-extracted for no reason. To be fair, this is one of the more novel ("idiotic crazy Kojima") things I like about the game. Who does this? No one.

Now I have to think about getting box upgrades and good box etiquette. Where's that goat tape...

Can't wait to start trapping animals for my private zoo so I can have good karma for all the people I want to murder. I think that's in the Old Testament.

I have a file on PS4 where I did everything and even some FOB event stuff, but now it's time to start all over again. Mostly just running around right now, finding invoices and doing some side ops for quick cash. There was a time where I didn't know you could fast-travel the areas by doing the cardboard box stuff -- crazy.

I forgot that Cloaked in Silence starts automatically, kinda like that annoying quest she has way later on that locks you into an autosave. Luckily, you can beat this one with the old-fashioned "drop garbage on her" strategy.

At bases, there are little shipping platforms where you can get invoices. If you're undetected and the base isn't on alert, you can put yourself in a box and quickly get to bases across the map. Not as useful as it could be, but better than nothing.

I love doing tank battalion side ops because you can take down some of the patrolmen, then airlift the tank out of the way and just go loud on the ones guarding it. Always pretty funny...as long as you don't forget snipers.

I have been meaning to play the Phantom Pain for a while now. I played most of the Metal Gear games recently and even did everything in Ground Zeroes to get all the perks to get in the Phantom Pain...just when I start up the Phantom Pain, it is hard to keep playing. "Too much" is how I feel about the game. Plus, the fact it apparently doesn't have a proper ending based on different tidbits I've heard about isn't good to hear.

I'll max out Quiet's stuff and then switch to D-Dog, I think. Don't really remember which missions to leave her out of -- there are some where she just gets eaten alive. I think that map where you fight all those other Skull snipers in the jungle (before the Code Talker place) is one where she's way outgunned.

Leaving D-Dog's recruitment for later is kinda funny, though. Normally you'd have Kaz call in and give his "come to Mother Base; it's good to rest" speech, which makes sense early on, but I'd already been doing that routinely to visit my zoo, so it just makes him look silly. I haven't been gone that long, man. (Although on PS4, I did get the "you stink!" cutscene once.)

Pequod, how could you? You have blood on your hands, mister.

This is one of the more enjoyable missions in the game, though -- that is, infiltrating the mine to kill witnesses for some colonel, only to find out the would-be targets are children, which causes you to turn the tables. Now if only those little brats would listen to the "wait" command instead of running the 40-meter dash every time I clear the area.

Ahh, Mother Base just got attacked by hoodlums. I think this is the FOB intro mission (?).

Anyone know if you get demon points by deploying as members of your combat unit? I mean, they don't have head injuries that grow weird demon horns, but I feel like the developers -- in their unholy quest to penalize killers -- probably nixed that option.

Did the Man on Fire battle yesterday and thought I was gonna kick ass, due to remembering the Water Pistol. It really didn't work out that way, but I did end up winning instead of running away like a wuss. I think there were some other methods to cheese the fight (weather manipulation?), but I forget 'em.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/9/916ee79d.jpg

Was a bit tardy in finding D-Pup, so this took forever, but now he's back in action. Also makes me remember why I use Quiet instead of everyone else: she knows how to stay under your way. I was doing a prisoner extraction mission and hid in a box, waiting for some patrollers to go by. Instead, they noticed D-Dog, chased him off, went back to their flashlight search stuff, then just repeated it when D-Dog scampered back.

He has an eyepatch, though, so we're still cool.

Might redo this mission later to extract all the child soldiers. You're supposed to get twenty of 'em, but I can't remember if I should do twenty immediately at the northern extraction zone or do it at the end. Not even sure you can do it at the end.

Didn't bother with Ground Zeroes myself this time, but I had to remember a lot of stuff again when I started playing, too. Just off the top of my head:

  • Using the "Return to ACC" option instead of bothering with calling a helicopter, hoofing it 400 meters, then waiting for it to descend, then let me in, then waste another minute of meandering before finally ending the mission. Sometimes you just need to get to da choppa. (The option isn't available at Mother Base, though, lmao.)
  • There's a mission in Africa that requires you to have a bridge fixed to get into the area where you fight those Skull (?) snipers. But, if you don't want to wait, you can go north of the diamond mine and proceed clockwise until you get to the other side. Took forever, but I think the enemies in Code Talker's mansion have higher stats than normal (maybe?), so it would've been nice to remember that.
  • At first I forgot you have to order Quiet to deploy in areas to scout and stuff. I had a "why the hell is she only moving once?" moment.
  • Speaking of helicopters, the "move from one part of the base to another" option wastes so much time at Mother Base, I'm never doing it again. From now on, it's only back and forth from MB to the zoo, or vice versa. I swear, getting from the command center to the medical platform took 2-3 minutes. My boy Pequod earned a leisure cruise now and then, but damn, man.
  • If memory serves, the mission where you go to Skullface's base later in the game can be continually aborted and restarted to harvest freight containers. I remember doing that on PS4 for some reason, probably to clean up some of the spare gadgets. (Also had to remember that extracting white containers is a waste of money -- red ones contain ten times more goodies.)

I'm sure there's more stuff. But yeah, I seem to remember S-ranking all the missions and doing all the side objectives at some point. Not sure if I have that in me this time, but we'll see. Definitely not looking forward to developing FOB-related items that take literal weeks to research, though.

Damn, Wormhole Fultons are great. I'd completely forgotten you could even get 'em. Immediately went and snagged those Nova Braga containers that you can't get any other way. Really, the function is almost perfect...EXCEPT when you need to do a "extract yourself by riding a fulton'd container" objectives. Then you're up a creek without a fourth-dimensional paddle.

Memory unlocked: hiding beneath this checkpoint's comm hut and cutting enemies off at the legs with a beanbag shotgun. In general, luring people to these locations by toggling the base power switch is amusing.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/4/4157ee86.jpg

Kojima logic aside, it's always funny to see that, not only did children escape Mother Base, but they made it all the way to Afghanistan's warzone and got up a minaret's skeleton. They don't even apologize, those li'l brats.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/1/1f379a54.jpg

This "find the wandering Mother Base soldier" mission was amusing, because of his terrible stats. I had D-Dog zap him before he could run away, heard Kaz's "bring him home, boss!" response, then the game presumably kicked him out as soon as he got there. MB don't want no scrubs, son.

I couldn't play mgs v without having to worry about my fob being invaded.
I had everything maxed in terms of defenses, bunch of c4's near certain spawn points, aa guns, machine gun surveillance cameras, SS+ soldiers everywhere...
Just was waiting for my base to get raided like the way the mayor of Townsville would notify the Powerpuff girls that their town was being attacked!
Then I would raid the invaders FOB and start using mobster tactics on them by killing witnesses, destroying their defenses and stealing their materials >__>

I was Hella sweaty, that game put me in a dark place

I think the resources FOB invaders steal is online-only stuff. If you're worried about your good soldiers being shanghaied, you can do direct contracts to prevent that stuff. You can't do DCs for all the good soldiers, though, so I suppose you'll just have to counter-infiltrate anyone who goes after your stuff, haha.

To be honest, I used to do a little FOB stuff -- mostly during events (?) to get special rewards -- but never got all the S++ soldiers in my bases, though I did develop all items before. Shame that the online cameras and stuff take weeks to develop, but I guess they didn't want people getting too much, too soon.

Probably gonna need a few more FOBs to get my resources flowing before I worry about online, though. Only got 130 MB coins right now. Not sure if I should go for the S-ranked precious metals FOB or the one that has S-rank in the three generic categories. Latter'll probably be better in the long run, I guess, but the former is more tempting for easy money.

Man, doing this oilfield mission on total stealth is such a pain in the ass. I spent an hour yesterday doing it nice and methodical, then a two-man patrol group I had lured split up around a holding tank and fouled everything up. Have half a mind to just give Quiet her Brennan sniper and murder everyone...which is probably how I got through with my sanity on PS4, haha.

I'm sure I could look up easy ways to do it, but I don't want to go in loud. Maybe you could shoot a rocket at the water separator tank instead of picking your way into the compound, then toss a grenade into the window for the shutdown switch? There's probably plenty of vantage points on the cliff, but it seems kinda lame to do it that way, given all the S-rankers who've been showing up.

Can't remember if the shutdown switch is for all power or just the machines. If the former, it could be a good single-file lure...

Shooting my own dudes in the face to finish this mission was rough, but I locked up my S+ dudes first and didn't care about the others too much. Still, Snake took it the worst, since he smeared ashes on his face like a goofball. We all grieve differently.

Also got Hideo earlier. I hear some people dislike having him, since he doesn't have max stats and you can't get rid of him, but I'm not to that point yet.

One of the few rare animals where I actually remembered where they were AND got them, though it took forever. I also remember where pangolins and ocelots are vaguely, but they haven't shown up yet.

Finally did the damn Mfinda mission over the course of two nights, then exfiltrated by riding a wormhole'd container (saw that you have to press the button again to hitch a ride). D-Dog helped out here, but D-Horse's bond dropped 'cause he left the party early, haha.

Huey got set adrift. It was amusing how he tried the "you have no right to judge me" tack, as if anyone else here had dumped their comrade -- presumably while still alive -- into an AI tank to drown or something. In a perfect world, Ocelot would've shot a hole in Huey's liferaft when no one was looking.

Never played Peace Walker, so some stuff doesn't hit as hard I'm sure (as I understand it, Paz was secretly working for the bad guys, Cipher, the whole time), but all the bomb stuff from Ground Zeroes made it one hell of a demo. I remembered out of nowhere to do the memento stuff, and wound up having to just go back and forth ten times to speedrun it.

I always remembered the silly (???) Chico = Quiet theory going around when the game released, too. Pretty sure that was debunked, but I'm sure some tinfoil-loving people out there keep the dream alive.

This gives me "Cid Highwind sitting on the Tiny Bronco" vibes. Remember that official artwork you'd see on the FF7 disc change screen? Sometimes, you just gotta take a moment and chill from all the terrorists you'll shoot and all the zebras you'll steal from Africa.

It just wouldn't be a MGSV playthrough without stumbling into Quiet's final mission, forgetting where it starts. Luckily, this time I had good rockets developed and brought electromagnetic mines, so it wasn't quite as annoying as in the past. Probably doesn't help that the RPG Quiet finds in the barracks is some Soviet junker that has to three-shot a gunship.

I seem to remember using the Parasite Suit armor stuff on this segment once...

Could've sworn I'd put cages at this exact location, but I guess I didn't remember the right spot.
