Seems like thats an issue Republicans have at least acknowledged and are actively working on. Democrats on the other hand just refuse to learn the lesson regardless of how many of them die in office and leave disastrous consequences.

The job of an elite politician isn't like the jobs that the rest of us do. It has more in common with being a member of an elite gentleman's club. Making sure your chums get 'their turn' when it comes to appointments, schmoozing the donors, dining with lobbyists, doing backstage handshake deals, etc.

Plus, you have status, a media who wants to listen to your so very important opinions, and a staff whose function is to stop you looking like an idiot (not a guarantee).

They wouldn't be doing the job in the first place without a giant ego and inflated sense of their own worth. So why would they give it all up to hang around on a ranch with a wife who has hated them ever since they were caught fucking a junior analyst in the mid 80s?

You can blame Senators for never retiring but you've also got to put some blame on voters who keep electing the same old people to office over and over.
