It's going after rich people, and those rich people might happen to live in neighborhoods that have more white people.

Removing "white" from the bolded title does nothing to water down the actual policy.

The reasons why the richer, whiter neighborhoods arent paying their share in taxes arent race neutral. Ignoring that element of his statement is whitewashing and that would be a huge error for someone running for NYC mayor. Maybe, just maybe, the guy who just won the primary and is in position to win the office knows more than you.

It also won't be used against you in any legal challenges. You can bet your ass the rich of NYC will absolutely use the language of "richer and whiter" to say the tax is racially discriminating and therefore unconstitutional.

Remember: The rich can afford better lawyers than you and will use them for long term profit/savings

The general electorate is different from the primary electorate. Not being able to adapt risks a loss.

Seriously, this doesn't really help to shake off the accusations that the left/DNC hates white people when they couldn't even realize the simple problem of phrasing like that.

And the problem is so bad in NYC especially that you have even some Dems going the racism route in response. Dem. George Latimer got away with saying his opponent "doesn't care about anyone who isn't black or brown" and had an "ethnic benefit" as a black guy in the race, literally revolting statements you'd only expect from the far-right, and he still won the primary.

Gotta be careful with the whites nowadays.

The white and rich neighborhoods are a lot of the ones that backed him in the primary. And I think tbh his base has a lot of white people who are just as smart as the people ITT.

A lot of "oh it doesn't bother me, but the voters..." here is making the assumption that no one is as smart as they are about this stuff. What if, and hear me out, white Mamdani voters like me don't really care about this? Or, and this is crazy, support it? For all the reasons that people ITT have laid out about it being good policy?

The NYC electorate is slightly different from the national one.

The average person is uninformed, but the average person doesn't vote in off-year elections. About 1 million voted in this primary; about 1.1 in the 2021 general. I can see turnout going up given a competitive race but...

We're a big tent party, and everyone is included regardless of your race, religion, or sexuality. Diversity is the strength of the Democrat party, and saying your specifically going to tax rich, white neighborhoods does go against our inclusion message, and plays right into Republican's fearmongering tactics.

My God, I think I can run a better campaign with far fewer egregious errors, than a lot of these morons we have. And I don't have the charisma necessary to be a politician.

That is NOT what is being proposed

What Zohran is proposing here (basing property taxes on full assessed property value) is both economically efficient and race neutral.

Partly, yeah.
1. I think a lot of white liberal/progressive/socialist voters in NYC share the views of those in this topic.
2. The people who show up for mayoral elections are disproportionately people with college degrees, in a city that is already above the national average in that department. They're smart enough to get this stuff.
3. The vast majority of voters in an NYC general election already voted in the Democratic Primary, during which they were bombarded with messaging about Zohran's support for defunding the police, "moving the homeless into the subways" and whether he does or does not support "globalizing the intifada". I think if you weren't fooled by that, I don't know why this would be any more powerful an attack.
