He's just so hostile with every interaction I have with him.

There's a small alley between our houses with both of our AC units and some grass. The whole time I've lived here, I've assumed that the "property line" is at the concrete block where his AC unit sits. I've been cutting the grass on that side accordingly for years and he has never said anything.

I've been working on cutting down and trimming back trees on the side of my house that face his. Then I'd pick up the trimmings until my compost bin is full and pick up the rest after they come by to empty it. Some of the trimmings fell down on the grass on what I thought was my part of the property.

Yesterday, I got an alert that someone was in the alley. It's usually just because my neighbors are cutting their part of the grass or whatever, so I turn off the deter function temporarily and leave it alone. This time I looked at the camera and he's angrily throwing the trimmings onto the garden area where the trees sit. Then he went back inside, and I thought that was the end of it.

Then a few minutes later, he rang my doorbell. I let out a sigh and went to answer the door.

He assumed I was throwing the trimmings on his property so he'd have to do double work and was upset about that. He pointed out that the fence line that separates our back yards is just barely past the retainer wall that has the garden area for my trees. I just told him I never looked at the fence line and thought the property line was where his AC unit was.

I guess I'll just stop cutting the grass on that side then. So, in reality, he has now created even more work for himself. *shrug*

I try to avoid interacting with him because almost every interaction with him was angry about something where he assumed I had some evil intent.

My father has the same type of neighbor. When I left home 30y there was noone there. Just woods. I guess at sometime he built a house and moved it. From what my Father has told me they have gone back and forth for years. I even had a issue where we have a larger recycle bin and he ended up stealing it. I went and took it back. Understand I never had neighbor issues. Biggest one was my neighbor had passed and he had a contested will. For years no one was there to take care of his fences. My cows started to get out. I had to track down his kids and talk about them helping me replace it. They said since they no longer had cattle it was up to me to replace it. I was pretty unhappy. Luckly the ones I did get along with got the property. They helped me pay for it and build it.

My old neighbor was cool but pulled an annoying move when we sold the house and moved.

Apparently one of our downspouts was draining towards his yard. Never noticed. Which is fine, I wouldnt have minded addressing it. But living there for years and never hearing a peep about it. But then out of nowhere trying to finalize the final approvals and inspections and suddenly raising this complaint. Like it nearly sabotaged all the timing we had with the moving parts of the bank, attorneys, etc rushing to correct that.

Kind of ticked me off.

Fences make good neighbors. If at all possible I would want a fence put up. Also cutting grass isn't work for me. It's an enjoyable pastime.

house neighboring mine is a rental, some dumbass bought one of those cheaply 'rehabbed' houses for like 5x the actual value, and it came with the cheapest wooden privacy fence you can find half assembled at a home improvement store. because of a myriad of issues with the house and property renters are in and out of that house every couple months, which means every couple of months its another roll of the dice on who i'm gonna be sharing a truly shit adjoining fence with.

one of the previous ones from about a year ago had two dogs, both of them pitbulls that they insisted were standforshire bull terriers, both of them absolutely vicious. one of the neighborhood cats wandered into their yard and the little bastards ripped its head off, and even worse the idiot owners had no fucking control over them so it was common as hell to have them running loose in the neighborhood looking to murder something. had to kick one of the bastards off my dog when it ran up and tried to rip his throat out, got really lucky that day.

but my biggest issue was the fact that they had the shitty wooden fence separating my yard from theirs, and the fact the dogs would absolutely throw themselves at the falling apart fence every time someone was in the yard doing something. i ended up having to rebuild half that god damn fence to keep them from breaking into my yard and mauling me. i ended up contacting the rental owner and reporting his tenants after repeated animal control calls did nothing, they were kicked out about a month later because the dogs had started chewing their way through the walls out of boredom from being locked inside all day.

made me miss the old neighbor, yeah he was a hoarder who never cut his lawn but as long as i cut it myself i didn't have to worry about pests and he never caused a problem.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

during the day its kind of expected that you're going to hear your neighbors making noise. if they're pulling that shit at 2am though i'd start thinking of creative ways to annoy the fuck out of them

This topic reminds me of why I never wanted to buy a home that is close to other homes. The houses might be expensive and the neighborhood might be prestigious, but if you have a dispute with your next door neighbor it can be a serious headache.

Another crazy thing... When I moved in to this house back in 2021, there was no one living in his house. He used to live in the house across the street to the right.

After the first hostile interaction I had with him, he said he had such bad blood with that neighbor that he sold the house, packed up everything, and moved his family to the house right next to me.

So maybe the real answer is I need to actually start shit with him over and over so he'll move somewhere else

I think thats my dads problem with his neighbor. My dad fenced in his whole yard. See years ago we had rash of breakins. One of those they stole my nes and games. It was mostly friends of my siblings. Now we have sensors and cameras and protected from prying eyes. His neighbor hates it because its not uniform. My father has been here 45 years when there was just 5 people on the street. I think my Dad told him to mind his own business

To play a smidge of a devil's advocate, maybe his previous neighbor WAS a piece of shit and it's made him kind of on edge of other neighbors.

I get that line of thinking, but, lol... I'm comfortable in assuming this guy was the problem.

My friend's neighbor tried to have my car ticketed and towed out of my friend's yard because he thought I was on his property. This is more easily described with a cheap, rough diagram:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/8/8c1e75d9.png

Basically, it was always agreed that when I would visit my friend at his house, I couldn't park in the driveway so it would be clear for his mother to pull in and out of the garage, or if another member of the family came to visit. Fair enough, so we agreed that "my parking spot" would be on the other side of the garage, under a tree that was growing next to it.

One day I went to visit him and parked where I always do, and we left in his car to go do something I can't remember, I think we went to go get some food or see a movie or something. When we came back his neighbor was standing next to my car with a very confused-looking cop, who said I needed to move my car off his neighbor's property.

My friend immediately flipped out and said I'm clearly on his property, not the neighbor's, and pointed out that the fence separating the yards was about fifteen feet away from my car. The neighbor kept insisting that EVERYTHING up to the garage was his, so my friend went inside, grabbed a copy of the property line printout, and showed it to the cop. He then asked his neighbor why, if he thought his property line extended that far, his fence was built so far back and my friend was mowing his lawn.

Apparently it wasn't the first time, nor the last, that the neighbor tried this shit and that's why he had the property line printout ready to go.

Frequently it is because they are just an awful person and everything they do is done with spite. They cannot fathom the idea of not being a spiteful asshole all of the time, so their default assumption is that whoever did the thing must have been doing it to piss them off. Even with something as simple as offering to help an elderly man by mowing his overgrown lawn. He'll assume you're questioning his manhood or just wanting to snoop for stuff to steal later. Miserable people are awful. It's a shame that we can't move them all together into their own little gated neighborhoods, where they can just be angry at each other.
