Going by the general discourse...

Sonic Adventure = Good
Sonic Adventure 2 = Good
Sonic Heroes = Mediocre
Shadow the Hedgehog = Bad
Sonic the Hedgehog '06 = Terrible
Sonic Unleashed = Mediocre
Sonic Colors = Good
Sonic Generations = Good
Sonic Lost World = Mediocre
Sonic Boom = Terrible
Sonic Forces = Bad
Sonic Frontiers = Good

and somehow they have like 30 different sonic models just for those 10 games.

No, its been very consistently bad.

I'm trying to think of another but I can't, really.

Personally, anything with boost gameplay sucks. So the Adventure games were the last good 3D Sonic games for me. >_>

This is basically where I'm at.

I haven't loved a 3D Sonic game since then, and anything I've played since only really had parts that I liked but was still overall mediocre.

I feel like the hate is a bit overblown, honestly.
It's only 06 and Boom that are complete trash. The rest range from mediocre to good.

I recently played some Sonic games.

Revisited Adventure 1 and 2 for the first times since I was a kid. Loved them back in the day and they're very jank, but still pretty good more or less. I cut them some slack for being the first, but somehow they seem to have far better gameplay mechanics than stuff that came after.

Frontiers was okay. The core gameplay was pretty good, but it's a very strange game with a good amount of issues.

Shadow is bad, but I also kinda had some fun with it. I went so far as to unlock the true ending which was a huge pain in the ass, but I didn't want to kill myself while playing it. Plus some of the ridiculously edgy stuff was funny.

Heroes on the other hand was horrible and I have no idea how this game gets off so lightly from Sonic fans. I fucking hated it. Awful controls, gameplay, level design. Forced to replay the same tedious ass levels over and over if you want to beat the final boss. Shit jumping, grinding, combat. Awful bonus stages. Was very surprised with just how bad Heroes was.

Colors is also surprising how it has such a good reputation. It's solid. Nowhere near good imo, but I was expecting more based on what I heard. It's mostly mindless gameplay.

So that's 3 goods with asterisks, 1 mediocre, 1 bad and 1 awful.

Really wish I could a played 06 without buying a copy off eBay. Maybe someday, but then again if I was ever gonna do it, that mini marathon of games was probably the time. I do want to play Generations though. I'll check that out at some point.

I'd argue Secret Rings is pretty trash on my account. Even as someone who generally has no problems with motion controls I got so frustrated with Secret Rings, Sonic is nearly impossible to control right. Black Knight wasn't much better because of the giant lag from sword slashes.

But aside from those, yeah I'm on the side of saying that the criticism of most Sonic games is overblown.

Berseria - Great
Arise - Okay-ish

Tbh a lot of Colors' reputation is from coming right after the dark era (and people were still sour on Unleashed at the time). It's a fun game, solid and polished, but doesn't have super high points either, and I can see some people not being fond of the wisps.

Either way from the ones i've played

A1: Some of the best sonic levels and the other gameplay styles are short enough to not be very intrusive (while mostly still feeling Sonic-y enough), but mostly aren't super high points either

A2: Again some really high points with Sonic/Shadow and Eggman, but treasure hunting
draaaaaaaaaaaags (would be about 60% fixed if the radar properly worked), Tails drags too sometimes.

Unleashed: Daytime is almost perfect, especially now that you can play at 60fps with recompiled. Nighttime is surprisingly polished and can be fun but they really should've made the stages shorter (and relied less on tightropes/catwalks). Medal collection drags the game down a lot too

Colors: Polished and fun without really any low points but it feels you get less opportunities to go fast and in general there aren't huge peaks

Generations: Eh bosses but almost perfect otherwise.......aside from Planet Wisp

Lost World (3DS): Peaks on a REALLY good first level and nosedives immediately just due to level length

Forces: It's like they took every criticism towards the boost era and decided to actually make it true. Genuinely the one actual "Boost to Win" game, and classic sonic is utter garbage here.

Frontiers: Jank as hell but surprisingly fun to just roam around, and same for cyberspace. Final Horizon amps up the jank as well but the new challenges and extra characters are fun to use. Also the bosses have SAUCE

Shadow Gens: Practically perfect, some of the best levels and bosses in the series, fun and unobtrusive gimmicks, and Shadow feels like a joy to control. Even the hub challenges are good

Adventure 1 and Colors were okay

So no. I see a consistently bad franchise with a couple good games

Paper Mario has two good games, and then a mixture of garbage and weird experimental stuff that works sometimes
