I think the playoff clinch scenario for the Brewers on Friday now is Brewers win and Giants lose.

Bucs lose sixth straight after sweeping the Dodgers. After two losses in extras, this one ends with Oneil Cruz caught stealing. Life as a Pirates fan is pain.

Jays take the series against the Stros with a dominating game today! 6-0!

O's sweep the Pirates :) Up next the Jays! Too bad it's way too late for the finally somewhat healthy O's to make a playoff run.

The site below gives 3 different clinch possibilities for the Brewers today, 2 for the 6th seed and 1 for the 5th seed.

Brewers win and Reds lose are needed for all scenarios. Then it's either Giants lose or Mets lose to clinch the 6th seed, and if both lose, then that clinches the 5th seed.

I didn't think the Reds game mattered if the Brewers won, which is why I didn't mention it in post 473. Since they included it, I looked at the standings and schedules to see if there was something, or if the site just didn't factor in clinched tiebreakers. Turns out there is at least 1 situation where the Brewers need the Reds to lose.

There could be a 4 way tie at 90-72 between the Brewers, Cubs, Reds and Giants with the NL Central title and 6th seed up for grabs. In that situation, the NL Central title is determined first, and the Reds would win that 3 way tiebreaker (combined head-to-heads: Reds 14-12, Brewers 13-13, Cubs 12-14). The Giants would then win the 3 way tie breaker for the 6th seed since they had winning head-to-heads against the Brewers and Cubs. Cubs take 7th seed with head-to-head over the Brewers.

MLB has their standings updated to reflect the Brewers have clinched a playoff spot, though they did last night. Not the first time baseball has gotten clinching scenarios wrong since switching to the tiebreaker system.

The Phillies' magic number to clinch the NL East is 1. They win or Mets lose and they've got the division. Barring that, they can also clinch a playoff spot with losses by both the Reds and Giants.

The Nationals and Twins have been eliminated from the playoffs. There might've been tiebreaker situations that eliminated them before, but neither can now catch the win total of the 6th place team in their league. MLB doesn't show eliminated on their standings, but ESPN does. They have the Nats eliminated, but not the Twins.

Meanwhile Jays and Yankees are still super close.

The Royals avoided the sweep to the Phillies by knocking around a still not himself Aaron Nola. I've all but conceded that the Royals likely won't make the wildcard but at least they aren't dead yet. Not their worst season by a long shot but still disappointing to watch it slip away after being within a game of the #3 spot a week ago.

Looks like the only clinching scenario today is the Cubs are in with a win, a Reds loss and the Diamondbacks beating the Giants.

An 87th win for the Cubs means they can't do worse than 75 losses. Losses by the Reds and Giants would give them 76 losses, and while the D-backs would remain at 75 losses, the Cubs have the head to head tiebreaker. Giants have head to head over the Cubs and Cubs vs. Reds is still TBD (5-4 Cubs with 4 games left).

Angels and Pirates are eliminated from playoff contention. The A's and Orioles can be eliminated with another loss, with a couple other scenarios that can eliminate the O's even if they win.
