Dark Souls 3, Balatro, Xcom Chimera Squad.

Now they will no longer launch.

Something like DS3 would make me think something broke on the games end, but Balatro is a strange one. Have you tried forcing different Proton versions?

Chances are an update to Steam OS broke something. They are trying to get a general release of Steam OS 3.0 out.

I have no idea what proton is but I found suggestions like that on google but didnt understand shit about what they meant about it.

What fixed it is when I verified the integrity of the install on Dark Souls, it ran again fine after that, then all my other games ran fine as well.

Have you tried restarting? I have that issue all the time with titles I have ultrawide mods on.

SteamOS which is the operating system that the Steamdeck uses is Linux based. Most of these games don't natively support Linux. Proton is the compatibility layer that converts Windows commands to Linux commands that allow these games to be playable. Like any piece of software, updated versions are released. Switching to a different version can sometimes resolve issues.

GE Proton is a community managed version of Proton sees more frequent updates. This is especially relevant for new releases (or some older ones which might not be getting official attention) which might run poorly, or not at all on the official pron.

Thank you, and the issue has been fixed already but you got me interested on that bit where there is a version that gets more updates than the original, is it difficult and tech savy to switch proton versions on my deck? and I am understanding that if I do, then I am tasked with manually updating and looking up said updates as opossed to automatic updates from the official version, correct?

You would need to go into Desktop Mode and just install the program that pulls down the latest GE proton versions. After that you can go into the game's setting on steam and choose which GE proton version to use. You can switch back between official and GE-proton at any time and it set on a per game basis.

Just use windows

I currently dont own a windows computer, my pc is a mac and it works well for most PC use, I just use steamdeck for games since I got gifted one.

You could install Windows on your Steam Deck, but I wouldn't recommend it.
