Did she never look for him during the Empire years?

She thought Anakin was dead until she came up against Vader. She probably did think Obi Wan and Yoda were dead too.

Probably, it was a pretty safe assumption to assume every Jedi was dead unless you expressly knew otherwise.

That does get me thinking. If Anakin had beaten Obi-Wan on Mustafar and hadn't gotten cooked to a crisp, then the entire galaxy would have known that Darth Vader was actually the Jedi hero Anakin Skywalker.

It would have made a lot of the mythos around Darth Vader a lot less interesting, huh.

he wouldn't have become known as vader to the public, just like palpatine never revealed he was a sith. palpatine just used vader as an enforcer because he was a crippled quadriplegic with no other use.

They could have revealed that at any time already. The fact they didn't suggests Anakin was always going to be known to the galaxy as Darth Vader.

She knew both of them were alive.

She talks about him in the past tense and when asked about what happened to him she brings up Order 66. She doesn't realize he's alive until she encounters Vader in space.

And even then shes in denial about it until she confronts Vader face to face and cuts his mask off

I'm not sure Palpatine really cared. As Darth Vader he's this mysterious person who just came out of nowhere being this powerful enforcer, and that mystery just adds to the threatening nature. As Anakin you could have him being the one Jedi that stayed loyal to the Empire when the rest betrayed them which makes for good propaganda. Either way is good for Palpatine. But I feel like Anakin/Vader considered Anakin to have died after Mustafar, and Vader was all he was now, which is why they went that direction.

they went that direction because he was a heavily scarred quadriplegic and not the photogenic "hero without fear" that palpatine had been touting him as all throughout the clone wars. palps plan was to use the war hero propaganda to his benefit, with anakin as the last loyal jedi in full support of the empire and in a public position. he'd have probably ended up as a moff or something similar.
