I like it, and I love Kevin Smith, but the way they treat lesbians in the movie is not very nice.

its as if these guys have literally never seen a gay couple before. I cant get over how shocked Jason Lee is when he finds out the two women are lesbians. Its like hes talking to aliens. That part hasnt aged well at all

It's okay, but I sort of agree with that girl who debated him at the college on one of the Evening With Kevin Smith docs about it coming off as him saying "Every lesbian just needs a good dick."

Fun fact, the ice skating rink in the movie is in the town I live in. I pass by it all the time.

That's how I feel tbh. I liked it when I first saw it, but looking back now, there were lots of parts that didn't age well. Even if I look at it as "fair for its day" (like that Jason Lee scene you mention, many people at the time had no experience with lesbians and probably would have reacted like that back then), the plot of "man falls in love with lesbian and lesbian comes around and stops being lesbian" is just...bad.

I really enjoyed it, but I haven't seen it in a long time and I suspect it probably hasn't aged well.

Its definitely got some very problematic parts but its far and away Kevin Smiths best film

I talked about this in the Mallrats thread and copied info from wiki but it was stuff I knew as a long time fan. It was inspired by his brother being gay and not ever seeing any gay representation on screen and Kevin thinking that kind of sucks and it was because his good friend and executive producer Scott Mosier had a crush on a lesbian filmmaker Guinevere Turner they met at Sundance in 1994. After the festival Mosier and Turner kept in touch and he developed feelings for her that werent returned. This kind of turned into the movie but with other stuff.

Kevin always said he knew nothing about gay culture and even less about lesbians and he shared the script with Turner and she provided input and she found some of the locations they used for bar scenes. Just because a single lesbian had input obviously doesnt make it universally accepted in the LGBTQ community but I think he went into it earnestly with a good heart and while it obviously missed with some, its not been problematic for others.

I love it. The original Jersey trilogy is still my top stuff. I was a full blown Smith fanboy by 97 and saw this in theatres on opening. Ill always remember it was April 4th 1997 because April 3rd is my birthday. I was 21 and we were in port so I celebrated the start of my birthday weekend by good food out with my two good friends who lived at the beach with me that year in the Navy where we were mostly in port and then I drug them to the theatre to watch this. Great night.
