Like it feels like it should be, with a bit of tweaking, the second film in a trilogy about the Justice Society

outside of that, standing on its own, it's a real "2007" superhero movie

honestly tired of the rock.

Also the fact that it's starring a character who started as a Captain Marvel (Shazam) villain, and it came out within half a year of the second Shazam film, and the two had almost nothing to do with each other.

there is also that this casting was done in 2007, and at that time Black Adam actually was intended to be used as the villain for a Shazam / Captain Marvel movie

I enjoyed the movie well enough, but I absolutely loved Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Fate.

this movie was basically a vanity project for The Rock. we get it, you're strong and bad!

Imagine thinking the entire DCEU could revolve around Black Adam, of all characters.

And he vetoed any Shazam connection because he wanted Black Adam to fight Superman instead. And since The Rock has it in his contract to never lose...

how is the audience supposed to have any sense of tension or urgency in the film if the character is basically infallible and invincible?

Yeah The Rocks ego definitely went wild with that one. I didn't hate the movie, but for all the build up it should have been better than it was.

I think this is some kind of myth. He loses in several movies like Doom and Get Smart. If it existed at all, it was probably just for F&F as a means of passive aggression with Vin Diesel.

The movie was good for exactly what it was trying to be; a mindless action popcorn flick. I dunno what some of you guys were expecting.

I'm actually really glad movies are getting away from origin stories. A lot of the big names don't need them because we know who they are and they're probably on their third reboot to begin with. But even more obscure characters, just introduce who they are and go from there. Like any other story. We don't need to see the main character going through the academy before any cop movie. It makes the world more lived in when there are already people doing their thing.

Black Adam being meh is why he had to crawl back to Vin Diesel to be in the Fast and Furious again.

Black Adam was supposed to be such a different character that starts out full villain THEN mellows out to be more like an anti-hero but they just skipped all that

There was a WSJ article about FF7 that talked about how Johnson, Vin Diesel, and Jason Statham all had stipulations about how many hits their characters were allowed to take in fights, and the whole thing morphed into "The Rock mandates that he can't lose in any of his films."

As far as I'm aware, there's never been any evidence apart from that article.

Black Adam is meh to fine if you go into it with your eyes wide open, but I feel when it came out a lot of people (for some reason) though it would be something different.

Granted the reason thought that was because the Rock said it over and over again. He said Black Adam wasn't like all those other superheroes, and a lot of people seemed to think he meant "He is at best a morally questionable hero, at worst he is a villain like in the comics."

I took it to mean "Hey kids you know The Rock, is super cool and badass, so Black Adam is going to be super cool and badass too."

I sort of enjoyed Black Adam as a film because it was exactly what I thought it would be. I think the morally complex character would have been more interesting, but I did not for a second think The Rock would make that movie, I saw the movie I assumed The Rock would make. As as a dumb fast and furious type action movie with super powers... meh it's fine.

James Gunn should let Pierce Brosnan play Dr. Fate again in the DCU. That was wasted casting.

You clearly dont remember the marketing or plans for this movie a few years ago

Rock went behind people's backs to bring Henry Cavill back and had it written in his contract he wouldn't take any decisive losses.

The whole thing felt like a coup to take over the DCEU. But his movie didn't do well, so it failed.

the rock has been wanting to take over hollywood for years

and his attempts where going good for a while but are now floundering as his movies keep flopping

The Rock can't be the best actor in the movie or it will be bad.

I am hoping he gets cast again although it's probably unlikely Gunn will use Hawkman and Hawkgirl at the same time. If I could put him in any uncast role for DCU I'd give him Martian Manhunter.

I really like Aaron Pierre so I not super torn about it or anything but Hodge actually did Voice Acting for John Stewart already. I think Gunn should have given him a shot.

It's one of the few super hero movies that i actually wanted to watch again. I honestly can't say that about most modern super hero movies, cause most are well over 2 hours, throw in useless or dragged out drama, and sometimes tries way too hard for fan service (looking at you end game).
This movie is actually fun, and it being described as feeling like a sequel is pretty spot on, cause it doesn't drag like most super hero movies in the beginning.
The movie may not be exceptional, but it's certainly far from terrible.

Do you mean ongoing series? Because he had a 6 issue miniseries in 2007-2008 following up on his plot line from 52.

It was interesting because in 52 his magic word had been changed, and he spent a lot of the miniseries trying to guess the new word. So while he was going around doing stuff, he was just listing off word after word after word.

I enjoyed it (especially the heroes sent to apprehend Black Adam ignoring the cruelty of the region they are sent into being a dark comedy of sorts), but I wouldn't rank it anywhere near that high.

using the Justice Society as a critique of American imperialism in the middle east is something that was only lightly addressed at in the film and they should've went harder with that angle tbh

i love that it uses paint it black just cuz black is in the name

it's an ok movie, that might have been something quite unique if not for the rocks interference. The storyline is really mashed and can't quite find focus.
