It's a King adaptation? I'll probably skip it then. I love King but his work is almost impossible to adapt, only Kubrick could pull it off and he had to take massive liberties, and I guess Carrie was passable too, but it got rid of the epistolary narrative which really made it shine

Misery is considered a great adaptation and it was so good Kathy Bates won an oscar for her performance.

Same. Though it depends on how faithful it is. If it's too different, it might be annoying.

Speaking of which...

Ehh, there've been a fair number of good adaptations. But usually the best ones change a lot of stuff.

Speaking of which, they're doing a remake of The Running Man, which will probably be closer to the original story, but which in turn will wind up being worse than the original movie..

Yeah, it's funny how he wrote some of his darker stuff at the time under the Bachman alias. Almost like, when he realized a book was going to be too nasty, he'd shuffle it off to his darker alter ego instead. Or maybe knowing that he was writing a book that was going to be published under the Bachman name let him go a bit crazier than he otherwise would have if his own name was going to be attached.

And then, of course, after he got outed, he basically wrote The Dark Half about the whole Bachman premise, like an autobiographical story filtered through Stephen King madness.

Needful Things was probably the worst adaptation. The Dark Tower was passable. Misery, Carrie, Cujo, Pet Cemetery, The Shining, Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, Christine, Silver Bullet and many others were very well adapted. Overall Hollywood has done pretty good.

In the book, are they alllowed to stop to use the bathroom or sleep? I dont see how a person can go without using the bathroom without rupturing their kidneys. Also wont you die without sleep?

I mean unless you are a purist or some shit and any change is bad, for instance in Misery a few things are altered from the book.

It is amusing seeing people not get upset when other books take more drastic changes like Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park is a pretty damn interesting read with a lot of cool science in it that goes into quite a bit of detail. Spielberg did a great job recreating the action and crazy scenes but a lot of that stuff was axed.

Readers most always except that movie adaptations change things but the degree of the change is important.

At least with King stories, he hasn't used Hollywood to finish a story to make money.

I'm really surprised they are trying to turn a less than 400 page book about waking in a straight line into a movie.

I never said every adaptation was good.

I'd even say that there are different standards for different media. Like, The Langoliers was kind of shit, but if you keep in mind it was a low-budget TV movie you can kind of appreciate it more than if you're holding it to film standards.

It also kind of depends on how heavily you're weighting being faithful to the original source when judging quality. People who never read the original books for movies like Jurassic Park or Starship Troopers might enjoy those movies way more than fans of the books who are just constantly annoyed by what's missing out what's been outright changed.

The lack of sleep was definitely a huge factor in their overall health as things kept going.

And the big change I noticed so far is the speed they have to maintain is only 3 mph in the movie as opposed to 4 mph in the book which I always thought was a bit fast for a walk that was supposed to last so long. 15 minute miles is a pretty decently quick pace for something that is supposed to last days.

Misery, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and The Mist are all great. As a King adaptation, Kubricks was pretty bad.

His adaptations are a mixed bag, as are his books, but theres definitely more than a couple of very good ones.

With how long it is and the pace itself I don't think even a professional athlete would be able to do it.

I always wrote the story off because they did the weird stunt where they broke it up into six parts and released it one part per month. It just seemed like such a hassle, and it feels like a story written that way can't possibly be worthwhile.
