Used to be I posted with the express purpose of riling shit up. I've only ever gotten along with a couple people here, and they weren't the reason I showed up since we could talk elsewhere.

Now? I don't know.
I'm trying not to be so cruel and will probably use this as a place to practice NOT treating people like total shit, and also to blog about my rats once I can finally post pictures.

How about you? What do you get out of this place?

Because I refuse to install Tik Tok and don't much use social media but I still need my 21st century mandated minimum level of internet brain rot and this is as good a place as any. Been coming here too long to just leave it. GameFAQs is like that friend who you grew apart from a long time ago but proximity and familiarity and longevity just keep it on life support.

Not that I'm trying to get anyone to leave, but have you considered something like a discord server for some sort of mutual interest group? You can get that same minimum level of brain rot AND talk about stuff you like without it being being more of an obligation than an actual desire.

I specifically need the random assortment of nonsense that only comes up on a board like this with no distinct subject.

Ive always viewed GameFAQs as a live action role playing game where you can create a character and have it interact with other people and characters on the message boards. Was a lot of fun when I was younger, but now as Ive gotten older and more work and family responsibilities, I just dont have the same energy to keep it up. Now mainly continue to come for nostalgia and some occasional fun. Not to be a buzzkill or anything but this site will eventually die off and then Ill probably just do Reddit more.

Redditors drove me back. As weird and annoying as some potders can be, at least everyone is their own person (or an alt) rather than just some karma farmer that's indistinguishable from a bot because everyone knows how to get the most engagement and what comments yield upvotes so it's all the same jokes and takes non stop.

Like if a topic is introduced here and I read the comments I don't see the same low hanging comment made over and over and over again. Each person talks like a human, or at least a weird human, rather than a canned answer generator

Fair point, but surely there are other message board styled places you can go to that don't have upvotes and downvotes. Spoze theres no real reason to move to a different one if youre already established elsewhere though.

Also this. For better or worse everyone who posts here is clearly an individual and not a bot.

The only other place I ever spend any time is the steam forum for whatever game I'm currently playing. And that tends to be a repetitive stream of people coming in to complain that the game is too hard or broken and then, when given good advice by veteran players, completely reject that advice, refuse to be willing to learn, and insist that the people who like the game are delusional and can't see the "obvious" faults. And you can only go through that exact same exchange so many times.

I came here in 2003 because my boyfriend spent an inordinate amount of time here, and I wanted to know what was up.

Thinking about it, I probably lied in the OP. The real reason I came back in the first place was more like jealousy. I got along with some people here, but shit often got turned on its head by said boyfriend. So I left so long as he was here, but always sort of wished I could come back.

Then, when I did, people either didnt remember me, or assumed I was someone else, and got really shitty about it. Tainted by association, which is fair - I did marry someone who wasn't exactly nice to them, and then I wasn't exactly nice to them, and eventually just started showing up to be a bitch.

There are some fantastic subreddits with some great people, they just take a bit of effort to find.

Stay away from the front page and the major public subreddits for a start. Avoid anything politics related. If you're looking at video game subreddits, stay away from the more popular games, or games with a competitive or contentious community. Smaller games and older games tend to have much better communities. As do chill games like Stardew Valley.

I post on about a dozen or so subreddits that have way more interesting conversations than anything I see on GameFAQs these days. But I'd never venture out into more mainstream boards. And the Popular feed is pretty much entirely gutter trash. The contrast is amazing.

(In a way, it's like 4chan used to be back in the day. /b/ was always terrible, but you could still enjoy boards like /co/ or /tv/ or /ck/ and have interesting conversations with relatively normal people who shared your interests. But you had to be very, very wary when you decided to venture out into one of the other boards for the first time.)

It varies but I post while I'm pooping also, aka this reply, or during Uber rides.

Today, I walked a 1/2 mile in 95 degree heat with a backpack holding a 15pk of beer after working 8 straight hours without a break running a produce department at a major grocery chain where I walked at least 6 miles just doing my job while moving around several hundred pounds worth of goods. I usually do all of this in a fasting state.

I caught the 3:14 bus after clocking out at 2:45. After a short ride, I waited 5 mins and caught another bus that I got off of at about 4:15. Then I walked another 1/2 mile home with a 13pk while stopping at another grocery store, same chain I work for, to do a little shopping.

Did I answer your question?

Cause life sucks and I guess this scratches some kind of nostalgic itch for me. Not like my life was really that amazing when this board was in its "prime" either, but I like all of the "old internet" aspects about it that people have mentioned already. No karma farming and a discrete, time-based organization of threads rather than an algorithmic infinite scroll.

ParanoidObsessive posted...

If you really think that's why you can't leave, then you just need to swallow your pride and make an "I'm leaving" topic. Or go nuclear and close your account if you'd rather do it quietly but leave people no doubt. Or just not worry about it because I don't think you've given out enough info over the years for people to have much luck doxxing you.

Or maybe it's not that big a deal anyway. It all depends on if you're good at using the net in moderation, which I'm admittedly not. It's like these infinite scroll sites have conditioned me so hard that I'll still refresh a site like PotD regularly even though I know there aren't going to be new posts. TBF, back in the day with PotD there were new posts every five minutes or so... but I know it's not like that anymore. Anyway yeah I'm not good at the whole concept of like "only check the site when pooping". Instead what I've been doing is setting aside days where I just won't look at all, I tend to be all or nothing.

Ive been here long enough that its basically woven into my internet history. Back when I first signed up, I was coming here for cheats and walkthroughs, but over time it turned into just hanging around for the people and the random conversations. As a victim of domestic abuse, threats, and stalking I periodically keep tabs on my exs whereabouts (who posts prolifically) so that I can have peace of mind.

After leaving the state of California (and after being clear across the country), he could have chosen anywhere in the entire country to live and he chose to move within a couple of miles of the home we last shared. He then proceeded to send me an email letting me know i might see him walking around the neighborhood. I wish I didn't have to keep tabs on this disgusting man in order to feel safe. Moving cities away doesnt even give me enough peace of mind.

I have nothing to say to him, I just wanted to remove any ambiguity as to my reasons for it.

That really sucks. I had no idea the full extent of what you were dealing with - mostly because your ex is a liar and changes his story every time you ask about it.

I have tried to suggest some introspection to him, and even offered to have my husband foot the bill for his rehab, no strings attached, and got blocked for my trouble which is whatever.

Seriously sorry you are going through that. I've been privy to enough of the situation to understand that your fear is coming from a person whose lifestyle you used to fund while they did little other than abuse you in return, and that really just pisses me off.

Well thats pretty definitively damning and it corroborates the story we've all known for several years now.

Its discouraging that after everything that he has put on display in this very forum in plain view for everyone to see that this person is still welcome here and even defended by some of the people here.

I hope you find some measure of peace in seeing them on this dying forum trying to look cool as they give a day to day a account of their life that sounds like it came straight out of the end sequence of the film Requiem for a Dream.... And thats before you account for the obvious lies and embellishments and reduce it to how awful it ACTUALLY is.

It must have taken a lot of courage to finally get him out of your life. I hope that you have seen much better days since then.

One more thing @Nursereena I hate to ask this and you aren't obligated to answer this, but I've wanted to know for the last few years. Was this document real? Like did he actually go before a real judge in a real courthouse with this in an official court filing as the basis for his request for a restraining order? Or was this just a fake document made by a troll? Oof. 100% real. I cant even imagine trying to present that page of lies to a judge. The only part that wasnt a lie was because he was literally asked to leave my home so many times but wouldnt. In fact, I had been gone for a couple of weeks hiding at different hotels from him and couldnt afford to hide any longer. And a lot of times my guy came over to make sure I didnt end up a domestic violence statistic.
