I'm not entirely sure why this bothers me so much (other than standard issue pinky being unreasonably annoyed about trivial thing), but I guess it just represents a shift away from an era that seemed a lot...simpler? Like ok, maybe the humour is crass and the skits get old and stuff, but also look at these recent brainrot title cards.

Also his show just reminds me of what it used to be like with a bunch of bros playing games and being dorks and those days feel long behind me.

A lot of channels that are still around take an adapt-or-die approach to the YouTube algorithm. Whenever the algorithm gets tweaked, it has cascading effects on the form of people's uploads. The advent of A B testing tools provided by Youtube has also contributed to this sort of 'convergent evolution' of video styles. Right now the meta for this genre is stuff that can be consumed like a podcast, so that penalizes stuff where you actually need to see the video like skit jokes.

and youtube loves to promote anger

judging by the views most people stopped watching.

Youtube has quite aggressively moved away from supporting good creators and fun content and more towards advertiser friendly, sponsor friendly, ad-first, content brain melt first.

Seems like the idea of having a bunch of subscribers you like and having those videos pop up first is antithetical to their plan.

I f'ing hate when youtubers dedicate half their review to a stupid skit. The last review of his I watched was TLOU2 and despite me also disliking the game I thought the video was very bad.

I replayed the game and it was pretty good

hated it the first time cause of what happens at the start

I am still subbed to him out of some old stubborness but all he does now is review movies usually badly and whatever else he does news. I guess he still makes money and does well enough. I still think skits can be really funny but know when to end it. His Dragon Age review, he wouldn't end his skits, they kept going when they weren't even funny. it tanked the video for me.

I only ever saw his review for MvC3. I actually didn't realize there was a subset of fighting game players who only play single player until I saw that. So I guess he opened my eyes to that.

There are better reviews, but because I am a bit over amused from drinking last night. He recorded himself and telling Other Joe to buy a purple sexual toy for his review. His Saints Row reboot was funny too, but this sure was a classic era of people just making what they wanted and not having to chase an algorithm to make ends meet. I wanted to just share the clip, but it might have gotten removed. It has to be in here haha

Oh the bit is in the first five minutes. So there it is. I also liked his screen joke in the background where he would elaborate on the points he is making in the background. I think that was just the style at the time.

Feels like every single month "Joe sucks now" since like 2010.

I think the reality is people are just getting older and don't find Joe's style funny like they did when they were kids/teens.

If Joe started dropping 2009 era videos again, he'd get even more hate.

I've only watched like two of his videos. In Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 reaction video didn't age well as one of the things he did there was make fun of Rocket Racoon. A few years later, Rocket appears in well received and high grossing movie and became one of it's breakout characters. Now whenever there's a crossover game with various characters in the MU, he and other GOTG characters are pretty guaranteed to be in it.

And then there was his reaction video for MVCI where he failed to recognize Sigma and called him "Buzz Lightgear". Which is funny considering one of the things he complaining about in the UMVC3 was Mega Man not being added. Which makes me think he really doesn't know much about MM and only said that because that's what everyone else was complaining about.

He got extremely lazy.

now he just sits with friends and talks. 40 minutes about a trailer, he always tries to put out movie reviews and spoiler videos the day of release often totaling up to 2 hours.

back in the day he reviewed a new game a week about. Thats when it was just him.
today with numerous people helping him, better computers, numerous people writing, editing and playing the games for him he now only does 1 review a month at times? Sometimes 1 every few weeks. And theyre usually 3-5 weeks after the games release.

plus youll notice he doesnt even play the games much, but copies what other reviewers have said and will use their game play lots of time. Even copying stuff others said which was not true and false about a game he will just copying what they said just to have reasons to yell.
in the past he was nothing like that.

its pure laziness and doing the bare minimum for the most money.

the guy who revealed to me that these people exist (by being one of them) was also one of the most ridiculous, annoying, i-am-never-wrong type dudes i ever met.

Joe got boring. Even without the skits, his reviews were needlessly long and drawn out. At least the skits remind me of how YouTube used to be.

I liked Joe's reviews in the early days, where he was full of energy and passion, but in the past year I've gotten one or two recommendations for newer videos and he was just sitting in a chair and drunk or drinking.

A silver lining, nice.

While I'm not a fan of the story I feel Joe heavily missed the point, he really wanted Joel to get a hero's treatment when that dude was never meant to be a hero lol.

While I felt that Joel dying was fitting, what was really irritating was how he was unceremoniously killed by some nobody, and then we had to play half the game as said nobody.

Lmao the baguette stuff was funny in Claire Obscure. Par for the course, still but a french joke about bread eh I heard it before. Still funny hon hon. Didn't need to see Other Joe wearing that bathing suit though. Overall the review wasn't bad. I feel like I've grown down in ways even more so in the ways that should matter, but I still don't care about any of his movie reviews or his news or his whatever else he posts overall. I remain subscribed, like a sorta Guru Larry thing where well he started uploading again and that is a whole nother topic. He's a legit bloke, but some of his uploads now do teter towards well I uploaded this for basically sponsored content (which ppl do need to make money).....

I skimmed watched half AJ's Mind's Eye review finally, and I like how it did reference Mindjack an old shitty game he reviewed at the very beginning. This review didn't need to be an hour plus long. I don't recommend watching it. Just look up funny glitches and that'll do. There were parts I legit liked but he needed to reel that review in tighter.

To be fair, most youtubers who were big 10 years ago have fallen off. That's the nature of the medium.

Looking at those screenshots, his modern day thumbnails remind me of that famous Batman cover art.

Other than AVGN I can't think of any other videogame reviewer who was big a decade plus ago is still at least mostly relevant or people seem to still gravitate towards. People still watch Angry Joe, it's just different now. I remember watching Gamester81 or Super Derek is trying to make a comeback again (Derek isn't as old as Gamester). Oh I got a good one the Game Heroes came back they were the alternative to Screw Attack! But a lot of this stuff is just hobbyist now.

There is newer content that is worth watching still, but I am sidetracking this too much. There was a culture back then where people weren't just making it to try to play the algorithm I guess with a bunch of fake sounding names. Dungeon Chill and Majuular are cool, but they still do things their own way I guess and I was trying to think of old channels that are still relevant hehe

Doing the same kind of content day in, day out for 15+ years? You're going to get very tired of it, and that's going to show.

Sure, YouTube changes, but the transition from hyper energetic young guy building a career to millionaire in their 40s doing the same shit, is also going to have consequences.

I wish face reactions didn't become the defacto way to get "pushed" on youtube. It's so lame. Also I find it funny how the thumbnails automatically change based on what one gets clicked on most? What the fuck? Is this some sort of Clue movie where everyone sees different thumbnails and whoever clicks on a certain one the most is the chosen one?

I wouldn't know this if people didn't actually say this is how it works. I always wondered why I'd watch a video, not care much and then see it again in my recommendations and the thumbnail is different.
