Nintendo Store at Union Square

I suppose theres Pier 39 at Fishermans Wharf, Golden Gate Park, and Twin Peaks.

As for a spot to see the bridge, I dont know, maybe the place that says Golden Gate Viewpoint. Of course its gonna involve crossing the the bridge.

I'm going to stand by my precious suggestion of going to the Asian mall and getting Udon. I had it again last weekend and it never disappoints!

A bunch of you are from SoCal. Give me stuff to do in Pakistan.

Jokes aside

As someone who currently lives in LA, Im trying to think of if there are any notable food spots here that have locations in SF as well. And Im sure there must be, but at the moment, whats coming to mind is a place called Broad Street Oyster Co.

Mind you, the main reason that its particularly notable to me is because theres one at the Grand Central Market here, and thats a fun place.

The main thing I was interested in about it is that it serves lobster rolls two ways: cold with mayo, and warm with butter. Ive tried and enjoyed both. If perhaps you are coming from New England, I expect you may have some thoughts on lobster rolls and it might be interesting to compare what youre used to with whats available around here.

This is really cool but hard to justify going out of your way for unless you want to make a whole thing of San Jose!

That all said, someone mentioned Ghirardelli Square which is a really good choice! I love the brewery there and it has a really cool mini golf there too with SF landmarks.

It's also walking distance to the Pier 39, which has loads of good food, entertainment, and hangouts.

The Nintendo Store is pretty alright. I dunno if it's really worth going out of your way for, but there's some really good restaurants around there.

Golden State Bridge is a must too. Cool to walk across.

I recommend hanging out in Napa for a day too. It's gorgeous and has good wine.

I was gonna say something like it'd help if you mentioned where this is but I think you're referring to Japantown. Which is nice to stop by if you happen to be around, but not something I'd go out of my way to visit. It is kinda worn down, but the decorations are nice.

I already told him where privately, but since I'm not about gatekeeping good food it's Marugame Udon at the Stonestown Galleria mall. They have a handful of locations in the bay area and a handful in SoCal, but I've only been to that one and after probably a dozen visits it has never failed to impress me.

I wasnt expecting to make a topic tbh but Im honestly stunned how wonderful it is here. Like I was legit scared to go and expected nothing but homeless and human feces and needles everywhere. Its not like that at all.

Honestly as long as you avoid the tenderloin and maybe the mission district there isn't much to worry about. And even nearby it can be fine, I was there on Saturday for the symphony and it's not that far from some of the seedier spots, but was in a perfectly pleasant area near city hall.

The areas by the the stadiums, piers and bridges are particularly visitor friendly though.

Glad you're enjoying the city though. Too bad about the Niners game but at least it's only preseason.

Title made me lol

Yeah, in terms of areas to avoid, just avoid the Tenderloin and you should be good. There's some iffy parts of The Mission, but you gotta go there and get a proper Mission burrito from El Farolito or La Taqueria.

Check out Golden Gate Park if you haven't-- it's pretty nice to walk through. The Preisidio is where you want to go for views of the Golden Gate Bridge. I'm guessing you won't have time for this, but I usually recommend people check out the views from the Berkeley/Oakland hills on the other side of the bay bridge, because I think they provide a pretty great vantage point for seeing the bay (assuming it's not too foggy). But I'm also biased because I live in the East Bay.

SF has some pretty great cocktail bars, but I seem to recall you're sober?

The Ice Cream Bar in SF has possibly some of the best ice cream I've had.

Oh yeah, and you can always take a ferry from the ferry building to Angel Island. Not only is the ferry building lovely (though stuff there is overpriced), but Angel Island is a nice day trip to hike/bike.

To be fair, I often see counties north of Kern and San Luis Obispo and south of Santa Clara being considered Central California rather than either Northern or Southern California. Sometimes Kern and San Luis Obispo are included as part of Central California.

When they wanted to split up California in the 1800s, the line was there though. They didn't because of the Civil War, IIRC.

It makes a lot more sense when you look at the population distribution of California. People generally live near the bay area/central valley (NorCal) or near LA/San Diego. There's way fewer people in the upper parts of the state.

For real suggestions

Golden Gate Park is gorgeous. Botanical Garden and the museums are all great. Sunset districts nearby are real nice too.

Twin Peaks is great, especially at night.

Walk the Golden Gate Bridge and view it from all sorts of different angles, including on the Marin side.

If you travel down to San Jose, I would do a South Bay and Peninsula trip in general, so Mountain View, Palo Alto, Santa Cruz, Cupertino, Los Gatos, Burlingame, etc. Though, you have plenty to do in just SF.

It's mostly the non-tourist areas that are more dirty and filled with homeless. It's quite a stark difference. They've done a lot better job at keeping the tourist areas cleaner and better as of late though.

Glad you enjoyed it! And yeah, it's been annoying hearing people talk about SF (and California in general) with ever having been here. SF is not without its problems-- there's definitely problems with homeless people in parts of the city, and car break-ins/catalytic converter thefts were a huge problem a few years ago. The few years post-2020 were probably rougher in SF than elsewhere.

But I love the bay area and likely wouldn't move anywhere else in the country.

Talking large scale, SoCal is everything around Bakersfield and SLO and below. NorCal is Monterey to Napa.

Talking amongst Californians, I would add Central Valley which would be between Monterey and Bakersfield. I would probably add the actual NorCal, which is everything above Sacramento/Napa too. Probably do the Sierra/Tahoe area too.

there's no reason to make a region exclusively for areas of the state with no population, I'm not giving an inch to the weird Jeffersonian people

First of all, its not no population. Thats ridiculous. And secondly, yes there is a noticeable difference in population, and thats precisely why you make it a different region.

I dunno if this is true in other parts of California, but I feel like around here "NorCal" means something different from "Northern California". When people say "Northern California" I generally assume they're talking about Shasta/Humboldt/etc. while "NorCal" is the more common bay area + central valley meaning.

California would be the 59th largest country in the world by area if it were independent. For something so large and diverse, both geographically and culturally, yes it is pretty silly to just just have two subdivisions.
