It always seemed clear to me that it was supposed to be too crazy to actually continue in earnest. A reprise of the part where Marty arrives in the past and everyone thinks he and his car are weird even though they fit in with the then-present day. Those people couldn't have imagined the world he came from, and we were likewise not meant to see the world Doc returns from. But I don't mind that we went there in the sequel anyway. Then Capcom remembered that MMX makes money, went "LOL, j/k!" and made three more games which were, probably not coincidentally, the three worst games in the series. Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney is another good example of a game where the series was clearly supposed to end with the third game, but the executives demanded it continue and also demanded that the original protagonist come back even though it was supposed to star a new character (and it was also Capcom, just for good measure).
