Yes. I hope that some day soon we will have 100% automated vehicles. Human drivers cannot be trusted. There are too many distractions and the vehicles are too big now.

Human drivers also do stupid things like sitting through a green light and making someone else miss it. Overly timid or aggressive drivers create dangerous situations that wouldnt exist in automated systems. You wouldnt have people trying to bully people out of the way or people who have to wait five seconds to go

Freeway, not right now. Around the city, sure. Waymos are everywhere here in Mountain View around the Google campuses and in San Francisco, where traffic speed is slow.

In rural Midwest its not going to be something I ever have to rely on or probably even have the option for. With that said hypothetically if it was cost effective Id be open to it if needed but Id also like the tech to mature more just for peace of mind. Especially highway driving and frankly I would never trust them in winter snowy/ice conditions which is a major thing where I live.

I think as far as the U.S. goes I think its a viable future to replace taxi/uber/lyft in major cities. Like really major cities. But for most of the US I dont think in my life I would ever see it. Hell Id like trains/subway to be a viable in the US like it is in Europe but its just not viable here except for large and dense cities.

If I could jump on a train and get to work and home with a dependable schedule at a reasonable cost Id be open to that. But itll never happen where I live.

In 10-25 years when any issues have been worked out, and the cars are much more commonplace, absolutely.

If it's Waymo, yes. They're actually going about it the right way. I would not trust a driverless Tesla though.

I think once the technology advances enough, there should only be self driving cars on the road and humans shouldnt be allowed to drive unless its on private property/recreational courses etc

Absolutely, whenever I'm in SF I take Waymo over Uber/Lyft.

Theres unending compilations of Waymos crashing into poles, on the wrong side of roads, and plowing into deep water. They probably shouldnt be allowed considering they keep obstructing traffic and emergency vehicles.

Itll be decades until the idea is more useful than a tech bro demo but I hope we live to see the day.

Between an average AI driver and an average human driver, I know which one I think is more attentive and less stupid and it's not the human.

The second automated ubers roll out near me, I'm selling what I've got and never ever for a millisecond looking back.

Pros:
+ When the piece of shit breaks down, it's not my problem. I'll just go into the app and request a new one.
+ Come on, the above counts double and you know it.
+ Don't have to pay attention. I presume that will be the case looooooong before they ever make it to where I live.
+ No insurance. No upfront. Don't have to care about depreciation.
+ Likely electric, which I will otherwise not be able to drive for at least a full decade, probably more like two.
+ Don't have to pay a driver.
+ The car presumably does not have its own taste in music and volume.
+ Never have to worry about refueling again.

Cons:
- I really like being grumpy, and I can't find any reason to do so.

These are because, and I can't stress this enough, Tesla does not have full self driving cars. Tesla are at the level where they still require driver intervention in certain scenarios.

Yes, because I don't like people and would rather not interact with someone if I ever had to use an Uber or whatever.

I live in rural SC and don't ever see myself living anywhere else, so I doubt I ever will.

Not that I want to regardless. Driving myself on those quiet roads later in the day can be relaxing.

Not with current versions. Down the road, if most vehicles were driverless and the tech has advanced more, I would be fine with it.

Have you actually ridden in a Waymo yet? How can you claim they're "not viable" when they've become common place here in the Bay Area?

But Id agree with the studies that a slow car plodding along a pre-mapped gated area of wealthier city streets is likely safer than humans as a whole driving everywhere, but that doesnt address the concerns of the additional and unique traffic they cause and complaints from emergency services.

Their car on rails mapping solution will never work in a majority of places so thats context for my decades away opinion.

If the guy ahead of me takes longer than 2 seconds to get moving when they have the space to do so, I'm honking the horn. I've missed too many green lights to assholes being on their phone and not noticing.

Maybe if it was proven reliable over many years. Waymo uses both image processing and lidar. I dont think I trust image processing on its own yet

In theory a fully autonomous transport system would be more collectively efficient than a mess of humans who naturally do not cooperate and are exercising their own independent driving decisions.

This shines in tight places where there's otherwise gridlock, but on open road, the main angle is safety...but an autonomous system has it's own vulnerabilities. The problem people have there is now they have less to no control over their potential fates.

I had a very positive impression of Waymo so far. If it gets jammed, the main thing I'd bug out on is if for some reason I cannot evacuate the car. My only solace in that is it's not a Tesla

I know that exact feeling. Just last year my friend had a crash and I was in the passenger seat, it was wet and rainy and he made zero adjustment in speed and spun out on a sharp turn. My corner went into a wall but luckily he'd braked hard enough that it was a low impact

I've been in software engineering for 10 years and if there's one thing I learned, there are a lot of profoundly stupid software engineers out there. I'm not claiming to be great myself or anything. So no, I don't trust self driving cars

Vancouver's SkyTrain rail LRT is driverless, of course it's on elevated/designated track. I rode that a couple times, seemed weird - though kinda like being in an automated elevator I suppose.
