Edit: Not because his criticisms of The Phantom Menace are unfounded. I just think he got a lot of people into it who are a lot less smart but a lot more prolific than him. And he always has to bear the weight of suggesting JJ Abrams direct a sequel trilogy, even if he probably had no impact on that actual decision lol.

Kinda funny how RLM/Plinkett get blamed for starting prequel hate in general, Disney choosing J.J. Abrams to direct, Star Wars losing popularity, and I'm sure other things as well. That would make Mike Stoklasa one of the most influential Youtubers ever.

There were a lot of points in the reviews where it seemed like he was just nitpicking a background detail, a one-off character, single line of dialogue, or criticizing that something wasn't like how old Star Wars would have done it. There were parts in the review that were clearly well-researched and coming from a place of experience, but also a lot of parts that came across like CinemaSins or The Nostalgia Critic.

Their length also led a lot of YouTube reviewers to think that longer = more correct, and that's why we have so many videos of people angrily ranting about a movie for longer than the movie's runtime, often confusing their own opinions (or opinions found on Reddit, other YouTube videos, or 4chan) for bulletproof facts in the meantime.

This is also true, but I did notice an uptick in long-form reviews after the Plinkett reviews became popular, even when they had to be split into multiple parts.

The Plinkett reviews are what turned me off of even watching other RLM videos. Even though it's a parody of pop culture essayists, the videos still come off as pompous and pessimistic even as a joke.

While I'm sure there's listable nitpicks in their critiques of the films, why shouldn't there be? Nitpick is not a bad word when you do such detailed breakdowns. They can help narrow down the viewer's understanding of the writer's perspective. The comparison to CinemaSins is unwarranted and borders on libel (j/k). RLM grounds their nitpicks in decades of their own perspective and their understanding of cinematic language. CinemaSins just says whatever dumbass thing comes to mind without checking if its actually stupid or they're just dumb for thinking it is.

The Plinkett reviews are what turned me off of even watching other RLM videos.

They do some skits at the start of their videos but they're very different and more naturally delivered, more from the heart i guess you'd say. Mike doesn't do that voice, and he is foiled/supported by Jay and Rich Evans, who are great in their own right

The weirdest thing to me is forever going to be that RLM's Plinkett stuff got me into these kinds of channels and now I exclusively watch RLM's other stuff (BotW, HitB, etc) and never really revisit the Plinkett stuff lol

I'd have to see the context of the quote but I find it really dubious that gamergate-ism (maybe that's not the most precise way to describe it, but YouTube grifting very much feels like a direct descendent or sibling of it) can trace ideological ancestry to Mr. Plinkett.

many of these people where kids when he made those videos they watched them and internalized them

before you bring up it was just a character he played with modern media literacy as bad as it is do you really think they realized that

im not saying he himself is a bad person by the way i dont know anything about him or his views

but he did do outrage for entertainment rather than actually give a nuanced review of the PT

Not really. I cant remember the exact context of the quote, though it was a bit of and oof. But I legit cant think of another such like take and I find it entirely unreasonably to distill literal 50+ hour (1000s if RLM is taken as a whole) of critique down to singular or a handful of specially picked out comments.

If you dont think they did nuanced critism of the films, you were probablylooking out for specific comments while watching and didnt pay attention.

What's Plinkett mad about, he wanted Star Wars to be the original trilogy but moar, he got what he wanted mostly.

Male dominated doesn't mean no women, it was 60/40 as of a year ago with men still being the majority. And if we're going anecdotal aren't most of the people complaining and saying they're done men? So it was probably higher percentage of men pre Disney. Plus the 60/40 split is just ticket sales. I bet if you look at merchandise like toys the split gets even wider.
