Like someone in Philly saying they're going "down to "New York" or someone in DC saying they're going "up to Atlanta." Drives me nuts that people don't try to have a least a vague idea of what compass direction they're travelling in.

So you're only going on down to South Park if you're approaching from the north?

if you're not using cardinal directions to describe your travel you're just being needlessly vague.

In Jersey, you always go down shore, regardless of the compass direction.

Down is appropriate if you're heading south, from a significantly higher elevation to a lower one, or if you're coming from a suburb/residential area to a downtown area.

Yeah, that's one of the other scenarios where it makes sense, you go down to sea level. Someone from El Paso could say they're going down to New Orleans.

I mean, "up" and "down" to describe cardinal directions are based on nothing but common convention. There's nothing about North that makes it "up" except that we commonly orient our maps with North at the top. A map with South at the top is just as valid a representation of the Earth's surface, we're just not used to thinking of it like that.

It bugs me too. If I know the person well I correct them lol.

Also I wonder where they were talking about in the song "Going Up to the Country".
