If you're reading a resume and the person says they are "detail-oriented" what do you think they mean by that?

Pretty self explanatory. They notice the little details.

Means theyre time blind

They pay attention to the little things that most people would miss or not be concerned about.

For certain positions it's definitely a plus.

Their weakness is they work too hard.

It means any sort of misplaced punctuation or formatting mistake is getting that resume tossed in the trash.

We (as someone who is) notice everything.

They focus more on detail than speed on tasks. A pro depending on the task.

It's a very polite way of saying "I catch all the little fuck-ups that everyone else is too busy and / or self-important to notice."

Someone who pays attention to the little things. If you a detail oriented cook for example, they'll pay attention to all the ingredients, how much there is, how it's prepared, the order, etc. A less detail oriented may just eyeball everything and get the general idea right.

You do everything perfectly every time

It means they know a buzzword to get through the AI resume filter

I did use that in my resume and get paid decently

Working in kitchens I've heard it used as a backhanded way to say slow. I'm sure there are tons of jobs where it's a valuable trait though.

These modern application and their questionnaires make me feel like Im taking the GOAT exam (or whatever the thing from fallout was).

It has lost meaning and is used as fluff material. It's like adding "proficiency in Microsoft Outlook/Word/Excel/PowerPoint".

Im OCD so it definitely applies.

I do love though when they ask you why you want to work for them, and its just like Im very passionate about being able to afford food.

There are some younger new hires that come up with the most unhinged ways of, say, taking the first 4 characters in a cell and adding abc to the end. Using ChatGPT to vibe Excel. I hate cleaning up their shit.

It's a very important in my line of work, and something I pay attention to and follow up on when interviewing a candidate.

They don't see the big picture

It's just a check box, but I take it to mean the opposite of "big picture thinker." Could be good or bad, depending on how it's used.

Bingo. I also do payroll, so if I'm not detail oriented, I either get hunted down by employees angry about their pay or the fed/states for not sending enough for taxes

To me, it's a dumb buisness world buzzword. My dad never shuts about the importance of being detailed oriented and frequently boasts about being so himself.

If he is the prime example of detailed oriented (probably not), then it roughly translates to having crippling ADHD and becoming fixated and things that don't really matter. Constantly correcting others over bad English. Being incredibly pedantic over the correct way to do things and belitting others for going against that.

Basically more of a red flag than anything.

We found another one who doesn't understand why it's important.

They read what businesses put on the applications and add it to their resume.

In my experience it means the business doesn't have to waste time creating journal entries to correct your mistakes, create new invoices to correct for misbillings, and your excel formulas return the results you actually created them for.

I still can't see a buisness being ran by a bunch of clones of him or similar people I've met being all that efficient at the end of the day. Hell, they don't even do things in the least error prone way.
