Have there ever been sequels to beloved movies that were better than the original? Not just good, but something that blows the first title out of the water.
Most people would say T2 for sure. Most people would also say Godfather part 2, though personally I find 1 to be the better film. Aliens isn't necessarily better but it's different and interesting in a good way.

Also some people will probably say it's sacrilege but I think Fury Road is infinitely better than any of the previous mad Max films. But then if you consider that a reboot and not a sequel then the question is whether Furiosa is better than Fury Road and IMO not even close. I didn't understand how everyone loved that movie. The entire group I saw it with was extremely underwhelmed.

The third Bourne film is awesome. But it doesnt blow the first one out of the water, its just an awesome film like the first one. Second was good. Just good.

Listen, I get the love for Tommy Lee Jones, but I have seen him play 2 characters: Two Face, and grumpy man

TMNT2? I think of all my vague memories, most would stand out from that over the first. And certainly the third.

Also the one with Vanilla Ice, so take what you will of that.

Fury Road is a masterpiece. It blew my mind when I saw it. It's definitely better than all previous Mad Max movies.

I haven't seen any other Mad Max film so I guess I can't compare. While the visuals in Fury Road were fun, the plot was nonexistent made no sense. Complete mindless action.

BttF 2 > BttF 3

I think it's rather, the third of a series is always the worst and sits at the point where its overstayed its welcome. Second works tend to raise the bar and improve upon what made the first great. Thirds are just cash grabs.

It's there. It's the fact that action keeps up like the entire time without the necessity of excessive drama, romance or some convoluted plot. It's like all action.
It's all just like about a power grab in a dystopia.

Men in Black, Toy Story, John Wick, Shrek, would all like a word with you. They are all at least on par with the second.

Shrek 3 is garbage and Shrek 2 is a legitimate masterpiece.
